Because the abs are centrally located, when they malfunction, they can affect muscles in the lower back, legs and feet, neck, and upper back. Yesterday in clinic I saw a painful SI joint due to under active abs, a tight and painful neck, tight hip joints/adductors, tight hamstrings, and cramping calf muscles and feet. Not to mention a tight diaphragm, pelvic floor, and jaw. Having good neurological function in the center is critical in maintaining balance throughout the body. In NKT we emphasize this relationship, making sure our practitioners prioritize it. Image courtesy of Anatomy Trains.

In NKT Level 2 we apply our technology to the core subsystems. On the left is the Posterior Oblique (POS), and to the right, the Anterior Oblique (AOS). We find that those who are sedentary have a lot of problems with either one or both of these. Typical symptoms are lower back pain, groin pain, and abdominal pain. In the POS, the thoracolumbar fascia has to overwork very often for either under active glutes or lats or both. That puts a lot of strain on that structure. In the AOS, the abdominal fascia takes the brunt for under active abs and/or adductors. Doing proper fascial release will help, but unraveling the cause of the dysfunction along with that, is even better.

Breathe!!

If we make the habit of breathing conscious, we can start to feel how the diaphragm works and how the action of breathing affects the way we use our other core muscles.

Righting reflexes may trigger neck and pelvic muscle spasticity in an attempt to level the eyes with the horizon. So it's important to level the head and sacral base...

It is essential that massage therapists develop a good basic understanding of ribcage and thoracic spine (t-spine) biomechanics and their relationship to optimal breathing. Check out this fascinating article highlighting the relationship between breathing and back pain.

True!

When someone comes in with multiple complaints in one area, look for a common thread to link them all together. My client had long standing discomfort/pain in her butt and lower back. She pointed to a spot on both sides in the gluteus maximus area, and to a spot bilaterally that looked like the QL. What muscle is connected to both those areas? The tensor fascia lata! The TFL shares a common attachment with the gluteus via the IT band, and affects the opposite QL via the Lateral Subsystem. Sure enough, release of the TFL followed by activation of the gluteus and QL resolved her problem. In NKT we are always looking for the common thread, so that the homework is easy to do, and thus we get more client/patient compliance.
