Running-a-Mock

Running-a-Mock KCL's longest running comedy society, Running-a-Mock hosts weekly workshops every Wednesday 5-7pm at Bush House.

Come along if you want to make people laugh and be one of those laughing people. Running-a-Mock is a springboard for engaging with comedy performance for students, while also being an opportunity for getting connected with the London comedy community. Dedicated to providing accessible and educational comedy experiences, we host free weekly workshops and performances in improv, sketch and stand-up

comedy. We host weekly rehearsals and instructive workshops on comedy technique and performance at the Strand Campus for our members. Each week, a particular aspect of comedy will be highlighted and workshopped in a collaborative setting, with members being encouraged to share their own perspectives on the skill or technique. In addition, these workshops will create a space for members of the King’s community to hone their comedy craft. Running-a-Mock utilises London’s many opportunities for performers, organising society outings and bringing comedy professionals to campus. Our biweekly performances on Strand Campus showcase both members of Running-a-Mock and professional comedians. These shows are open to all members of the King’s community, as watching and performing comedy to an audience is an essential component of becoming a competent comedian. These shows rely heavily on audience participation, are inclusive spaces, and provide a great insight into the theatrical community at King’s.

Dear All,

We are sorry to announce that Running-A-Mock will be taking an indefinite hiatus effective immediately.

This was not an easy decision. We are just as sad about this as the rest of you, if not more so as we had so many plans for the next year and have had to suddenly cancel them. This is not curtains closed, so do watch this space for further updates in the near future.

We are aware many of you have not had the chance yet to attend one of our workshops, and we are deeply sorry that we never got to share our love of comedy with you. We would therefore like to highlight other tried-and-tested opportunities in London should you be still be keen on comedy:

The Free Association (https://thefreeassociation.co.uk)
Many RAM alumni have taken their careers here and flourished, with many of them having also worked here. They offer classes in improv, sketch, and comedy writing. They also have diversity scholarships and open workshops to meet like-minded individuals, which are free.

Hoopla (https://www.hooplaimpro.com/improv-comedy-club-london-bridge.html)
London's first improv comedy club. Here you can catch shows from professional improv troupes. They also allow amateurs to book to perform for a very reasonable price. Additionally, they offer courses in improv.

Stand-up Club (https://thestandupclub.co.uk)
With many venues across London (including London Bridge) there is no shortage of evening shows featuring the very best of stand-up comedy. The tickets are very reasonably priced, but some nights are naturally more expensive. They do not have amateur nights, but if you are very experienced you can try to book a spot. However, a lot of pubs and bars in London organise stand-up evenings for amateurs, so if you're keen do just ask around in your local area.

Thank you all very much for your interest in Running-A-Mock. We wish each and every one of you the best in your degrees, your time at King's, and the happiest life. Always have fun, tell jokes (especially the crappy ones), and keep laughing!

Best Wishes & Kind Regards,

Sarah & Ben

Hey guys, we know it's very short notice but our RAM get together tonight has been cancelled. We know it sucks and we don't want to do this but there's some unforeseen circumstances surrounding this decision. Again we're really sorry!

So, our room bookings got messed up for this week, which is big sad. We're really sorry, but it's out of our hands.

This Wednesday will be an online session over Zoom from 5:30pm-6:30pm. (Bit of a shorter since it's online) We'll still be doing all the things we usually do it's just going to be slightly different in terms of format.

Hey, we'll be Activity Room D in Bush House Southeast for our Taster session this evening at 5pm.

It's on Strand directly across Strand Building and just next to the Britain Australia Society. Head up via the elevator to the 8th Floor and go through the corridor that says 'Activity Rooms B-D'.

Hope the directions help - God knows King's has a very confusing campus (not aimed at you, GKT and Waterloo, you never did me dirty).

We loved meeting you all at Welcome Fair!

For our Taster Session we'll try to give you guys a flavour of everything we offer at Running-A-Mock - improv games, analysing our favourite bits of comedy writing, breaking down some excellent stand-up, and we'll be showcasing our material from last year. If demand is high enough we'll close off with a quick open-mike!

(Note: there won't be any sketch activities per se simply because it would not be realistic for the first session.)

We will also be announcing the winner of our grand prize!

Fancy a chuckle with some fellow students and checking out the comedy stars of the future?

https://tickets.ucl.ac.uk/bloomsburytheatre/website/EventDetails.aspx?EventId=193857&resize=true

Well on Monday 20th September the Chortle Student Comedy Award 2021 will be taking place at the Bloomsbury Theatre, a 25mins walk or a short bus ride away from our own KCL Strand Campus.

The comedy website ‘Chortle’ has scoured the UK’s unis to find the most talented student comedians around, but only one can be crowned the UK’s funniest student!

The gig will be headlined by the hilarious Mark Watson. Finalists over the past 17 years have included Joe Lycett, Simon Bird, Phil Wang, Iain Stirling, Ed Gamble, Chris Ramsey, Tom Rosenthal, Jamali Maddix and Laura Lexx… so expect to see the comedy stars of tomorrow.

The show starts at 19:30, and runs for about 2 hour 30min + 20mins interval.

Tickets are still available and priced £10 for students. If you’re interested in going drop a message on social media by Tuesday 31st August, and a few of us can go together. We can book a max of 6 tickets in one booking.

Summer Sketch Challenge: Reality TV

Unless you’ve been under a rock, or have a life, you’ll know that the finale of ITV 2’s ‘Love Island’ is this week. One of the final three couples will walk away, back to Essex, with the £50,000 prize from Casa Amor… with money like that, I can’t be the only one thinking of applying next year to pay my tuition fees!

These Instagram-hungry wannabees are just the latest in a long line of reality TV stars to have graced our screens over lockdown. We’ve all probably spent more time gasping over the virtual antics on ‘I’m A Celebrity’, ‘Married At First Sight’ or ‘Love Island’ than at our real friend’s bad life choices. I won’t lie; MAFS Australia got me through that second lockdown!

So let’s ridicule the hell out of genre of TV that is ripe for a roast!

You know the drill… 3 minutes of sketch or stand up all about… REALITY TV

We can’t offer you £50,000, but we can offer to post your videos on our social media channels... basically worth the same

Deadline is next Tuesday 31st August… I know what you’ll be doing with your bank holiday!
