For the past decade, I’ve been obsessed with understanding two things: what separates clients who succeed in their fitness endeavours from those who struggle, and what differentiates personal trainers who consistently achieve results from those who don’t.

Each client has offered new insight. Every challenge and success becoming another iteration in refining my systems and processes. Through this ongoing evolution, my framework improves with every individual I work with.

This client raised the bar, and there were a few characteristics he possessed that stood out to me.

♟️ His natural ability to plan. Always staying three steps ahead of himself.

📝 His ability to reflect on what was working well, and what wasn’t.

🧠 He showed a high level of self-awareness and strategic foresight; identifying potential obstacles proactively rather than reacting.

📈 He followed the data, was precise and honest, and trusted the process.

I have 1-3 slots opening up starting in January. If you’re in the Liverpool Street area and are feeling unfit, low in energy, or the mirror isn’t reflecting what’s in your head, then get in touch!

🛑 Stop weighing yourself once per week.
✅ Start weighing in 3+ times per week.

🛑 Stop making decisions driven by emotion
✅ Start making iterations driven by reliable data.

Once you have more than 10 data points, you can start to draw reliable conclusions on whether you are losing fat or not. The trend will give you a much more accurate representation of how things are going.

For women, your menstrual cycle phases may cause fluctuations of 1-3kg alone - so a larger data set (3+weeks) is likely needed to draw reliable conclusions.

💙 This client came to me with a history of exercise bulimia; using exercise as a way to purge after binge eating.

As personal trainers, we have a duty of care not to leave our clients in a worse psychological state than when they start. It’s easy to do accidentally and most of us aren’t taught much about eating disorders.

Our goal was to help him improve his relationship with food while supporting his fat loss without triggering old behaviours. That’s a minefield to navigate alone.

But I’m proud of how he responded to my coaching. His language around food gradually shifted.
Instead of saying:

“I was bad at the weekend, I feel guilty for being so greedy.” 🚩
He is now more likely to say:
“I ate out with friends, had more calories than planned, but I had fun” ✅

The way we talk to ourselves after indulging and the language we use has a profound impact on our relationship with food & exercise.

Be kind to yourself.

It’s messages like this that remind me why I love my job. Being able to improve someone’s quality of life and being a part of that journey is a privilege.

It dawned on me recently that less than 1% of my clients in the last 10 years have been medically obese.

Those who need the most help rarely ask for it.

“Gyms are for fit people” is a narrative that has a strong grip on so many who need support the most.

The fitness industry has failed MISERABLY at making these people feel welcome.

I don’t have all the answers for how to fix that.
But if you’re reading this and the gym feels like a mountain you’re not ready to climb…
Start smaller.
Start with a conversation.

Sometimes a simple chat with a professional can be the first step toward something life-changing
and in some cases, life-saving.

Getting in shape won’t inherently make you happy.

But aligning your values and behaviours with the person you want to become can be extremely fulfilling.

It’s often the disparity between who we believe we can be versus who we are that causes cognitive friction.

The path of least resistance is to ignore this friction. Accept that you’re less confident, binge eat when you’re emotional, avoid physical activity and wear baggier clothes to hide it. It’s easy to let that become part of who you are and to keep digging your own hole.

The further you dig, the harder it is to get out.

Is that really what you want? Or do you want to be someone different?
