Liam Delap’s first Premier League season with Chelsea is really a tough one in all honesty.
26 appearances, 1 goal and 0 assists is not the level we expect from a striker playing for a club competing at the top end of the table. His numbers show a player that struggled to consistently impact games in the final third.
However, Delap in few occasions still showed his physicality, aggression and work rate. His pressing and willingness to battle defenders gave Chelsea an option off the bench in several matches but his decision making, composure in front of goal and link up play still looked raw throughout the season.
The 3 yellow cards also reflect the aggressive side of his game. At times, his intensity helped the team but there were moments where it became reckless rather than controlled.
At 23, there is still room for development but based purely on output, this was not a convincing breakthrough Premier League season for Delap at Chelsea. The potential is there but he still looks like a striker that needs refinement and consistency before becoming a reliable starter and this patience is what I’m certain we do have at this moment. We need results upfront and we need it now.
Do you think Delap should be given another season? Considering the new manager?
