The ugly side of running and owning a business.

£20,000 pounds in legal fees and lease-hold improvements later only to be told if you don’t relocate you will be taken to court for £55,000 in damages (for noise) along with the council threatening stop notices and penalty notices.

Two options have presented themselves -

1. Relocate and have a chance.
2. Stay, be forced to shut our doors and end up in court.

Anyone who has trained at ARC knows we are not operating out of line. It’s also worth noting that we operate underneath a railway arch. A casual 284, 800 tone trains go overhead every weekday. Apparently the gym is more of a nuisance.

This is my first time owning a business and I’ll be honest, it has and continues to be a process of learn by doing. When I got the first solicitors letter, I panicked (and called my dad). A year of back and forth later and I’m less panicked when contacting solicitors but I would be lying if I said it didn’t stress me out and make me feel pretty weighed down.

I consider myself beyond lucky to have the community we have at and beyond, and a support network to guide me through these challenges.

We are going with option 1 and going to be relocating the gym. The reason I’m here writing this is because moving a gym isn’t cheap and the money its going to cost is money we don’t have right now.

We have set up a gofundme to help us. I’m asking for help because without it we will cease to exist. Please help me by sharing this far and wide and getting us into our new home.

As we can see, there is now light at the end of the tunnel.
Three updates from me so you all know where we are at.

1. April 12th we will open our doors again.

2. We are soon to be delivered an order of goods from Rogue.

3. All bookings and memberships will be done through TeamUp.

Dear Blackfriars,

In a year where much has changed, so too has the owner of Blackfriars Training. I am pleased to announce that I, Matt Rodwell have taken over the gym.

I want to reach out and thank you for your patience and reassure you that we will open again soon.

In short, I have big plans that I am excited to share. We will have a soft opening on the 14th — holding a limited number of classes, with a limited amount of people to adhere to government guidelines and safety regulations.

All of the classes from the 14th to the 23rd will be free.

Some of you know me, some of you don’t. I look forward to meeting those of you I have not met and seeing old friends from my time as a coach in CFB.

As an athlete and trainer, I’ve experienced the magic that happens inside the gym doors! None of us are strangers to the transformative power our community holds. I am committed to creating a happy, fun and safe environment for you to all come back to.

Amidst all of the chaos in the world it was yet another epic day at CrossFit Blackfriars. Our wishes go out to all of those affected by the Coronavirus! It is at times like this how much we realise how lucky we are to have the incredible members we do! Thanks guys and CFB will only be stronger for the experience!
