Join us in a warm welcome to Rob Aitken!

While certainly not new in the world of fitness, we’re excited to announce him joining Common Purpose in our new London Mayfair Gym.

Rob began working as a Personal Trainer in 2004 after finishing his degree in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Bath. Since he began, Rob has had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clientele ranging from professional athletes to superhumans in their 70s and 80s.

Over the course of his career, Rob has come to understand that the key to helping clients find their unique route to success is centred around building a trusting and cooperative relationship.

Now, even armed with many years of experience in the fitness industry, Rob continues to expand his knowledge in the ever-evolving fitness sector, striving to understand more about the human body with an aim to help individuals achieve their desired outcomes.

Rob believes that as part of the team at Common Purpose there has never been a better place for him or his clients to be to achieve this in the best way possible.

Join us in a warm welcome to Connie Gannon!

While certainly not new in the world of fitness, we’re excited to announce her joining Common Purpose in our new London Mayfair Gym.

She has experience in helping those of any age and ability achieve their personal best. Through coaching, she's learned that alongside a visible transformation, there should be educational empowerment for every client. That way they can continue to take their fitness to the next level.

Connie’s own area of expertise is in building confidence through rehabilitation and body transformations. She believed that there are many alternatives and opportunities for each individual to thrive and grow, helping every person in reaching their end goal.

Why do we sleep?..
Doesn’t it seem like a strange phenomenon? Having to subject ourselves to such a vulnerable state of unconsciousness seems to fly in the face of evolution. Imagine our ancient ancestors, constantly in a state of anxiety, simultaneously hunting for the next meal and on the run from predators.

On the face of it, it would seem that it’s really impractical to go unconscious for 8 hours every night. This hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst evolutionary and sleep scientists. According to the Author of Why We Sleep, Matthew Walker; “The cost of losing consciousness to survival is astronomical.”..

Thinking about entering a marathon?

So how long and intense do the intervals need to be if you are training?

Literature suggests there’s a sweet spot for maximal transferable gains, which seems to be just above the anaerobic threshold (zone 4 or 80-90% of max heart rate). This is the intensity at which fatigue builds exponentially after a few minutes. If you don’t know your anaerobic threshold we recommend using a heart-rate zone training calculator as an initial estimate.

Head over to our website for tips on intensity and duration recommendations!..

According to Gianne Pax and Michel Poulin, we can learn a lot about the diets from what they coined “Blue Zones”...
Blue Zones are areas are regions of the world where “higher than a usual number of people live much longer than average”...
Of course lifestyle, culture and genetics contribute to a large degree, but we shouldn’t underestimate the impact that nutritional intake has on health and longevity.
,,,
The common diets consumed in these Blue Zones share certain things in common..
Eat in moderation – These populations tend to eat within a moderate calorie restriction, practice periods of fasting and rarely overconsume...
Eat mindfully – most of these cultures eat with attention and intention and don’t eat until completely full...
Eat mostly plants – the majority of their diets derive from plant-based foods...
Moderate alcohol consumption – alcohol is consumed, but in relatively low quantities, on a semi-regular basis...
