Why do I love the Tappers?
Well how could an innocent "rebel" golf Tour to St Andrews create so much interest and debate as what has happened recently? I think the words and skill of Dicky B in explaining the conundrum, whilst intertwining English cricket dilemmas from years past should be posted here and remembered forever.
Jonny (or should that be Ali Bacher?)
I've been struggling with the 'rebel tour' analogy. Back in 1982, when Gooch and his dirty dozen sacrificed their test places and principles (although I don't think John Emburey ever had any of these) in exchange for 20 pieces of tainted apartheid silver, I swore that if I ever became a test cricketer, I would never join a rebel tour of South Africa. The release of Nelson Mandela (whose freedom I had courageously demanded at any number of student discos in the late 80s) and the eventual fall of the apartheid regime (brought about by my refusal to buy Cape apples or to bank with Barclays), meant that I would never be called upon to make this sacrifice - prepared though I was to make it.
In spite of my misgivings, your offer is being considered by my domestic management team - who will ultimately decide if I can go or not.
