If you were Satan and wanted to convince Black women, especially those with the tightest coils and curls, that their hair was inferior... how would you do it?
I asked ChatGPT this very question (inspired by ). Here’s what it said:
“I’d rewrite history to make it seem like beauty always looked like straight, European hair, erasing the richness and glory of our natural coils.
I’d control the media, making sure only women with straight or loosely curled hair get the spotlight, leaving those with tighter curls questioning their worth.
I’d plant seeds of doubt in the minds of little Black girls, making them feel like their hair is a problem to be fixed instead of a crown to be celebrated.
I’d make the beauty industry sell products promising ‘manageable’ hair, pushing relaxers, heat, and chemicals as the only way to be beautiful, professional, or ‘presentable.’
I’d whisper through policies and workplaces, discouraging natural styles like braids, afros, and locs as ‘unprofessional,’ forcing us to conform just to survive.”
But we know better. Our hair is beautiful. ✨
Our ribbon shaped strands emerge from crescent shaped follicles and can be moulded in a near infinite number of ways. Our hair reflects versatility and creativity. Reject the lies that tell you otherwise. Your crown doesn’t need to be straightened, tamed, or hidden—it deserves to be loved, nurtured, and worn proudly.
