Imperial College Wushu Society

Imperial College Wushu Society London's Premier Wushu Society. We run weekly training sessions on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at the Imperial College Union. We have socials too!

Wushu literally means "Martial Art" in Chinese language. It is usually taken to mean any and all Chinese martial arts. Our club is predominantly a Modern Wushu club, highlighted by performances and competitions, as well as use of training weapons. The History of Wushu is enormous. Shaolin Fist practiced by monks started at least 1300 years ago. There are hundreds of various styles and "schools" of

Chinese martial arts, some of the more famous styles include Taiji, Shaolin, Wing Chun, mantis, Hung Gar, and many weapon styles. Modern Wushu, a more athletic-focused and competitive sport, began in the mid-20th century. Some of the most recognizable kung fu movie stars, such as Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Ray Park and Donnie Yen, are all former Wushu athletes. Fight choreography from movies like The Matrix, Kill Bill, Serenity, and countless Chinese Kung Fu movies are also heavily Wushu based.

4 Reasons Why You Should Do Wushu
1) Wushu greatly improves flexibility. Those who join will find their flexibility improving rapidly, especially leg and hip flexibility. Top level Wushu athletes are able to easily go into oversplits, as well as land jumps and moves in splits.
2) Wushu is good for your balance and coordination. Each movement usually involves the entire body, and not just a specific arm or leg. Stable stances are a cornerstone of Wushu.
3) You will get to learn cool-looking acrobatics moves such as leaps and jumps, and students will work towards achieving such moves as no-handed cartwheels and 720-degree airborne spinning kicks.
4) Wushu builds confidence. Maintaining good posture and showing intent in your moves through sharp looks and eye contact are quintessential aspects of Wushu. The whole idea is to kick ass and look good doing it!
