*Trigger warning
The recent news of Sarah Everard is hitting home for most, if not all women.
If you are unaware of the situation, put simply, she was walking home.
Sarah was walking home from a friends house before she disappeared and was later found murdered.
One of the first things that came to mind was the “checklist”: keys between your fingers, walking on a main road, friend/family member on speed dial, checking over your shoulder (constantly). Like many other women, Sarah may of followed the checklist and her fate was that of millions of womens worst realities.
I learned about this checklist when I was 13yrs old. If that doesn’t speak volumes about the way women/girls are having to protect themselves from men’s behaviour rather than stamping out men’s behaviour I don’t know what will.
As woman, you are made to feel as if you’re the problem. For what? Walking home at night? Wanting to wear a short skirt/tank top, wanting to get home safely after having one too many drinks with your friends?
Women should not feel fearful about want to do these things let alone take a late night stroll, alone!
Statistically speaking men are also endangered but by other MEN, not women. This extremely concerning.
Women are not the problem. Yet it feels as if nothing has changed.
My condolences go out to Sarah Everard and countless other women and their families 🕊
