St Albans Sub Aqua Club

St Albans Sub Aqua Club BSAC Community Scuba diving Club SASAC is a volunteer sports and social club at the heart of St. Albans.

It was founded as a SCUBA diving club with its own boat, onsite compressor and open air swimming pool but it is much more than just diving, as it has snorkelling, swimming and a thriving social membership that all add to the character of the club. Many snorkelling members joined because of the under-water hockey, AKA octapush. In the 1980’s it took over and renovated the then derelict former city

swimming pool and uses it as its clubhouse. The club house has its own bar, common room and a lecture hall that it often uses to host parties and other social gatherings during the year. In the summer months they migrate to the pool-side courtyard that amongst other things hosts the ever popular Friday night barbecues.

A practical guide aimed at Sports Divers and above has been launched to help members plan and carry out small diving projects. BSAC Heritage Advisor Jane Maddocks, who is behind the guide, tells us more.

Hi everyone ! Social media has been full with speculation, rumours and the usual rants the last few days about the new parking charges at the marina !

So it’s now time to explain what I know is happening !

Firstly I have always been against this ! One of the main reasons I moved to Portland Marina 8 years ago was so all my customers had free parking !

The reason the marina have brought this in,is because of people abusing the parking ! Some People leave their cars there for days or even longer and are not doing anything on site !
The marina is growing and need the spaces for the people using the facilities !

So this is how it works

You drive in , the cameras log your number plate , you park and do what ever you have come to do . Before you leave you go to the machine or go on the App put your reg in and pay the amount you owe . However there are the following concessions

1. If you leave within 15 mins no charge

2. If you are visiting the cafe , pub , dive shop ( sorry don’t know about the other businesss on site ) you can get a 2 hr free parking voucher .

3. If you are out on one of the dive boats operating from the marina you can get from them , the dive shop or marina office before you leave a 50% off voucher .

The vouchers have a Bar code on which when presented to the machine reduces the charges as mentioned above !

I hope this has helped with people’s concerns if you need to know anything else make it up and post it on FB

Pete Tatton on behalf of James Hickman presented the Diver of the Year award to Graham Dicks who embodies the spirit of what club diving is all about: mucking-in when required and generally making things happen.

We're thinking positive but cautious with Safety and Development Manager Jim Watson as he talks about the BSAC's guidance and webinars to help divers prepare to dive another day.
