More people have been turning to tools that block them from gambling amid the cost of living crisis.

Online bank Monzo revealed that it has seen 50,000 of its customers make use of its gambling block tool for the first time over the past six months.

This is a third more than the number of people who started using it in the previous six months.
The lender also blocked 20% more transactions than it did in the prior period, it said.
And amid growing cost pressures, rising inflation, and shrinking household budgets, it seems more people are turning to the tool.

Online gambling has moved at a dizzying pace into the online era - with casinos and betting shops replaced by smartphones and apps causing a huge rise in gambling addictions.

👨‍💻Framework of Education on Gambling🎰

Responsible gambling charities GamCare, Ygam and Fast Forward have together launched a framework for the education of young people about gambling harm.
They say the evidence-based principles are designed for the use of educators with young people aged from 7 to 24.

“The framework will support professionals to raise the conversation about gambling harms and ensure education on this issue gains parity with education about other risky behaviours.”
“This framework is a practical resource for the gambling harm prevention sector and the education sector. We can maximise our impact through sharing best practices, exchanging knowledge and insights, and collaboration.”

They said plans to revamp the helpline and introduce more integrated regional services, more support for residential treatment and more cooperation between service providers and local partners.

🤝HELPING OTHERS👥

We all go through tough times and people help us through them. Other times we have been worried about other people’s mental health. Whether they are a friend, family member or colleague, there are many ways to support somebody you care about.

If you are worried about someone it can be difficult to know what to do. When you are aware there is an issue, it is important not to wait. Waiting and hoping they will come to you for help might lose valuable time in getting them support.
Talking to someone is often the first step to take when you know they are going through a hard time. This way you can find out what is troubling them and what you can do to help.

Eight tips for talking about mental health
1. Set time aside with no distractions
2. Let them share as much or as little as they want to
3. Don't try to diagnose or second guess their feelings
4. Keep questions open ended
5. Talk about wellbeing
6. Listen carefully to what they tell you
7. Offer them help in seeking professional support and provide information on ways to do this
8. Know your limits

🔞Sky bet fined £1.17million again❌

Sky Betting and Gaming, is to pay a £1.17m fine for sending promotional emails to customers who had self-excluded or opted out of receiving marketing.
On 2 November 2021, the operator distributed a Sky Vegas promotional offer of “Bet £5 get 100 free spins” to 41,395 self-excluded customers and 249,159 customers who had unsubscribed from the operator’s marketing emails.

These actions breached licence conditions aimed at ensuring gambling in Britain is socially responsible.

This latest fine from the Commission follows enforcement action in recent weeks against operators 888 and BetVictor which saw financial penalties totalling £11.4m.

🎰CRAVINGS💰

In a study between pathologic gamblers and alcoholics, the gambling addict experienced stronger cravings than did the alcohol dependent person

There are many ways to beat your gambling cravings, and they require you to change your thinking and behavioural patterns that have developed while in the grips of addiction. You will have urges to gamble while in recovery and counselling, it is not an on/off switch unfortunately. The temptation to gamble is hard to say no to, but as you learn to make new life choices and create healthier networks around you then you will succeed!

When you have a craving to gamble, here are some ways to help defeat the addiction and build the life you want for yourself. If you do not have these tools to help you, or only some of them, that is ok! Start just for today to look into making one or more a reality for you.

Step by step you will get there and will have all the support you need.

* Call a trustworthy friend or family member who understands your addiction

* Call your Gambling Anonymous sponsor or counsellor

* Fill your day with activities or keep a list of other things to do when a craving hits:go running, start a hobby

* Pop in a movie, watch T.V. or read a book, as the time will pass quicker and lessen your feeling to gamble

* If you have nothing to distract you, either learn meditation, breathing exercise, yoga taichi or sit still and tell yourself over and over that the urge will pass and reflect on the consequences your gambling has had on your life

With correct mindfulness training and constant mind distraction you can clear yourself from future cravings.
