The Shala

The Shala Yoga Teacher Training | Retreat Days | Livestreamed and In Studio The Shala was founded by Gingi Lee in 1997, as one of London's first dedicated yoga centres.

In 2014, the Shala expanded and took over a newly refurbished space in a Victorian warehouse in West Norwood, on the fringes of West Dulwich. And in 2016, it developed a well respected teacher training programme. The beautiful purpose-built new centre incorporates three light-filled studios, a therapy room, reception, changing facilities and a small coffee bar for post-practice coffee. There daily

classes encompassing a range styles including ashtanga, vinyasa flow, Mysore self practice, yin and restorative and Jivamukti yoga. The centre is just minutes from West Norwood overground station and is easily accessible from South London's surrounding neighbourhoods including Clapham, Balham, Brixton, Tulse Hill, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Forest Hill and Croydon. There are direct train links from Victoria and London Bridge, various buses and cycle racks and free parking nearby. The space is a sanctuary, peaceful, but vibrant and always warm and welcoming. A dedicated yoga space in which to enhance and develop physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A place to roll out your mat, be part of a community, share, heal and grow. Our teachers all share a deep love and respect for yoga and have a passion for sharing their knowledge and for training a new generation of teachers. Shala classes place an emphasis on encouraging students to develop an individual practice. Our ethos will always be centred around forming a close personal touch on all that we do. Being independent, sharing the love of the practices, and having a positive connection with like-minded people. The centre is also a hub for new life with classes for pregnant women, mother & baby, kids yoga, and teens yoga and a range of workshops from Aerial Yoga to Sound Baths and Breath Work.

Backbends often get labelled as "advanced" poses, but the real work happens long before the final shape. And there are so many ways to work with backbends.

Strength, mobility, breath awareness, stability, and patience all play a role in creating a backbend that feels both supported and sustainable.

What aspect of backbending do you find most challenging: strength, flexibility, or confidence? ✨

Every handstand begins with exploration as well as falling, trying again, and learning to trust the process.

The pose is only the visible part. What you don't see are the countless moments spent building awareness, resilience, and patience along the way.

Sometimes yoga isn't about getting upside down. It's about discovering what you're capable of when you keep showing up.

We asked our recent 200 graduates to share four words for what they carried with them from the training.

What came back was a kind of road map. Of who we are, what we represent, what people receive from training with us.

Over the next seven posts, we're sharing those words linked to our seven values that shape The Shala. One pillar at a time.

Teaching can be one of the most connected roles in the room… and one of the loneliest outside of it.

Saha Gatherings were created as a space for yoga teachers to come back into connection — with each other, with their teaching, and with themselves.

A place to share openly, reflect honestly, and remember you’re not doing this alone.

Our next gatherings begin 21 June 2026.
£20 per session | In studio + community space

Teaching inversions isn't just about getting students upside down though that is half the fun!

It's about building confidence, overcoming fear, understanding progression, teaching safely, and helping students discover what's possible for them.

This practical training will help you confidently teach inversions, arm balances, and backbends using intelligent sequencing, props, wall work, and accessible progressions for a wide range of abilities.

An extraordinary immersion in nature at one of the world’s most celebrated off-grid eco villages.

Join Gingi Lee in Sri Lanka for two weeks of yoga, deep rest, nourishing food, ancient jungle landscapes, and a complete shift of pace from everyday life.

No Wi-Fi in the huts. No constant notifications. Just the rhythm of nature, open-air yoga practices, Ayurvedic treatments, swims in the lake, and space to truly slow down.

A retreat for anyone craving reconnection, simplicity, community, and stillness.

Our bursary programme is here to support access for those who may not otherwise be able to take part in training, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds or experiencing financial barriers.

We want to support teachers and facilitators who will go on to share this work in meaningful ways within their own communities.

If this feels aligned for you, we would love you to apply.
