Thames Sailing Club Welcome to the UK's oldest river sailing club, here in Surbiton, South West London We also have a number of club boats that members can hire.

Thames Sailing Club was founded in 1870, making it Britain’s oldest river sailing club. We're known primarily for racing our historic Thames A Raters, the most exciting boats on the river, but we also sail other fun, classes such as Merlin Rockets, Omegas, Toppers and Comets. In addition to sailing, we have a vibrant, lively SUP group who regularly meet for river trips, and training. We offer excellent river sailing, SUPing and training afloat, combined with a friendly, traditional setting ashore that is second to none – all within easy reach of London. Our Boats:
Our most notable class is the amazing Thames ‘A’ Rater which is the unchallenged ‘Queen of the River’. They were designed in Victorian times specifically to make the most of the light river breezes and are still the fastest boats on the Thames. Built in wood originally and glass fibre more recently, the Raters are fast and fun. Our largest class is the lively Merlin Rocket where we have a particularly active group of Vintage Merlins. These include Omegas, Picos, Comets and Toppers. Our SUP team is the best in the area, offering river trips, training and social SUPing. Whether you're a beginner, or experienced, we've got something for everyone. Follow us on:

It was a weekend of contrasts in the 2025 China Bowl 4-race series, with challenging and exhilarating racing for the Raters on Saturday, with far lighter winds on the Sunday, as the last race was shortened due to a nearby thunderstorm. On the Saturday Paul Browning helming Osprey took two firsts to make him the clear favourite going into the Sunday. However Osprey had to retire in the first Sunday race due to gear failure and Jonny Smith helming Scamp took first place. In the last race a nearby thunderstorm meant the race officer shortened the race, but it produced the tightest possible finish with Osprey, Scamp and the Miles Palmer-helmed Vagabond all crossing the line within a couple of seconds. But it was Vagabond that took line honours, giving it second overall for the weekend.

TSC’s Regatta proved especially tough for the handicap fleet in their 4 race series. On the Saturday young Gideon Crees sailing a club Fusion 1 showed consistent pace and control to keep up with his father, David Crees, leading in his Enterprise. David then capsized on the last mark before the finish to give Gideon line honours. In the 2nd race Gideon also gained a clear victory on corrected time. Sunday proved tougher with Carlos de Arriba taking line honours from David West in his Solo and Ben Hughes in a club Topper. On corrected time David took first, Ben Second, Carlos 3rd and Gideon a fair way back in 4th. In the final race, with winds even lighter Ben sailed a fine race to stick close to David’s solo to take a clear first on corrected time, with Gideon 3rd. Overall then Gideon took the series and the Brown Cup, with Ben second and David third.
