What happens when we turn things upside down? 🙃

Yogis have been experimenting with this question for a very long time.

In early Haṭha Yoga, we find a practice called viparītakaraṇī — “the inverter.”

The yogic body was understood very differently then. Yogis imagined an internal moon, associated with precious nectar, and a sun below that consumed what descended towards it. Turning the body upside down was a way of reversing this process — of changing the natural order of things.

We love the idea of reversal.

Because sometimes doing something completely different — something unfamiliar, playful or even a little uncomfortable — can interrupt our usual patterns of attention.

Try balancing upside down and suddenly you’re probably not thinking about your emails.

You’re HERE. 🙃

And you don’t have to succeed.

Wobble. Fall out. Laugh. Get frustrated. Try again.

Because frustration is part of the practice too. What happens when we can’t do something straight away? Can we stay curious? Can we be beginners? Can we enjoy trying without needing to achieve?

Yoga doesn’t always have to be about finding comfort or stillness.

Sometimes we find presence by challenging ourselves, changing our perspective and giving our minds something completely different to do.

The early yogis turned themselves upside down to reverse the flow of something precious.

Maybe sometimes we just need to turn things upside down to see what happens.

Come play. 🙃

✨🌀 New Thursday morning flows with Yasmin 🌀✨

Starting Thursday 3rd September, join Yasmin for two new morning classes:

7:00am - Morning Flow
8:15am - Open Level Flow

Yasmin’s teaching is all about intuitive movement, curiosity and freedom - moving beyond simply making shapes and instead exploring the body’s natural rhythm with playfulness and fluidity.

Blending traditional yogic philosophy with an informed understanding of modern physiology, her classes invite you to use alignment as a tool rather than a rule, build trust in your own instincts, and discover what feels natural and authentic in your body.

Expect thoughtful, inclusive flows with space to explore, question, move, breathe and be - without making the practice about perfection or achievement.

A beautiful new way to start your Thursdays 💜

Coming back.

We hear these words often in yoga.

Come back to the breath.
Come back to the body.
Come back to yourself.

But what does it actually mean to come back?

Life asks us to move constantly outwards. We respond, organise, worry, remember, anticipate, perform different roles and adapt to what is happening around us. The mind becomes busy with everything that has happened and everything that still needs to happen.

And somewhere amongst all that movement, it can become difficult to feel where we are.

Yoga offers us an opportunity to return.

Not because we have actually gone anywhere, and not because there is some perfect version of ourselves waiting to be found.

Perhaps coming back simply means allowing some of the mental activity to become quieter, so that we can notice what was there underneath it all along.

Patañjali describes yoga as the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. And then comes a beautiful idea:

Then, the Seer abides in its own nature.

So we practise.

We come back to a breath.
A sensation.
A movement.
The feeling of the body on the mat.

The mind wanders, and we come back again.

Maybe that is one of the reasons we practise yoga — not always to improve ourselves, achieve something or become something different.

Sometimes we practise simply to remember.

To come back to the body.
To come back to the breath.
To come back to ourselves.

And then, inevitably, life calls us outwards again.

So we return to the practice.
And we come back. ♡

A little something to look forward to as we head towards autumn 🍂🎶

We’re delighted to welcome back Charlie Merton to host our next Gong Sound Bath, falling around the Autumn Equinox - a moment of balance between day and night, before we begin to move into the slower, darker half of the year.

Join us on Sunday 20th September for an hour to pause, rest and turn inward.

What to expect: you’ll get comfortable lying down with bolsters and blankets, begin with some gentle guided breathwork, then simply rest as Charlie fills the space with the sounds and vibrations of gongs and other instruments.

A chance to step away from the noise, get cosy and give yourself some proper time to rest and reset as the seasons begin to shift. 😌

🌈 Kids Yoga is coming to SOL Centre! 🌈

We’re so excited to welcome Tabassum Skelton to SOL Centre this September with a beautiful 6-week Kids Yoga course designed to help children move, breathe, play and grow.

🧘 Thursdays | 4:00–4:50pm

With many years of experience teaching children, Tabassum Skelton creates classes that are playful, engaging and welcoming, helping every child feel seen, included and encouraged.

Places are limited, so we’d love to welcome your little ones to join us for this special six-week journey.

We can’t wait to see them on the mat! 💛
