A backflip starts with the foundation.
In this video, I’m working with the children on a supported backflip progression drill.
One child crouches down in a small ball, while the other child practises arching back into a bridge and taking the legs over with support. This helps them feel the movement and shape of a backflip before building towards doing it unaided.
The focus is not rushing the skill. The focus is building the foundation first, flexibility, trust, agility, body control, confidence and courage.
It may look fun, and it is, but it takes concentration, timing and proper control.
This is what children’s martial arts should help build. Not just physical skill, but confidence, discipline, resilience and self-belief.
