A new ILO report reveals that psychosocial risks - like job strain, bullying, and long hours - kill 840,000 people annually from cardiovascular and mental disorders. 💔🧠
These aren't just "wellbeing" issues; they are core occupational hazards. 🦺

So writes Manal Azzi Team Lead on Occupational Safety and Health Policy and Systems at the ILO.

In her article looking at problems and solutions, she advocates a shift from individual resilience to structural change.

Recent high-profile HSE enforcement action on work-related stress suggests we are beginning to see a shift from guidance to regulatory action, says Emma Evans, health and safety partner at Bexley Beaumont law firm.

In a new piece for Safety Management magazine, she highlights two recent material breach notices issued to major organisations that show how managing work-related stress is a core legal duty, not just an HR initiative.

"HSE’s recent enforcement activity suggests it is moving closer to the practical intensity seen internationally," she says. "For UK boards and senior management, the implications are significant. This is not simply a compliance exercise; it is a governance issue."

Over 12,000 organisations have downloaded BSI’s BS 30480 standard on workplace su***de prevention. But how do you move from awareness to action?

Caroline Roodhouse, survivor of bereavement by su***de and founder of Daddy Blackbird Communications, introduces a new First Steps Guide, which breaks the standard down into actionable steps:

🥁Commit publicly: Appoint a lead and make support visible.
👩‍🎓Build basic knowledge: Teach teams to recognise warning signs.
🗺️Map pathways: Clearly signpost internal and external help.

She urges employers to download and use the guide. "Everyone will find something achievable and meaningful they can put in place to help address the often-hidden issue of su***de.”

"Health and safety is really important to try and reduce the number of accidents. We see some pretty awful outcomes for people."

As actor Stephen Fry seeks up to £100,000 in damages for an alleged 6-foot fall after making a speech at London's O2, John Kushnick explains what happens after a claim is made and what the differences are in a civil case compared to a criminal. John, legal director at National Accident Helpline also argues powerfully why high-profile cases like these help highlight the importance of health and safety.
