The Science Behind Mind Over Matter

1. The Power of Self-Belief (Self-Efficacy)
The belief that you can achieve a goal (self-efficacy) directly influences effort, persistence, and resilience.
Takeaway: Visualising success and setting realistic goals can enhance your motivation and push your limits.

2. Mental Fatigue vs. Physical Fatigue
Your brain often signals exhaustion before your body truly reaches its limit. This is a survival mechanism rather than a true physical limitation.
Takeaway: Training your brain through mental resilience techniques (meditation, positive self-talk, and breathing exercises) can delay perceived fatigue and improve endurance.

3. The Role of Dopamine & Reward Systems
Motivation isn’t just about willpower; it’s biochemical! Exercise triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to pleasure and motivation.

How do I Strengthen my Mindset for Fitness?

1. Reframe Challenges as Opportunities
Instead of seeing workouts as “hard,” think of them as a chance to grow stronger.
Use positive self-talk: Swap “I can’t do this” with “I’m getting better every time.”

2. Use Mental Imagery & Visualisation
Picture yourself completing a tough workout before you start. Studies show this primes the brain for success.
Olympic athletes frequently use visualisation to enhance performance.

3. Set Micro-Goals for Motivation
Instead of focusing on a distant goal (e.g., running a marathon), break it into small, achievable milestones (e.g., running an extra 1K each week)

Final Takeaway:
Your body follows where your mind leads. By training your mindset, you unlock greater endurance, motivation, and resilience—paving the way for long-term success in fitness and beyond.

Exercise during childhood may protect against memory loss later in life. Apparently for rats, this is definitely the case - at least according to a study performed by Martin Wojtowicz at the University of Toronto. 🐀 🧠 🧬

A study on them indicated that early-life physical activity benefits brain health throughout life. Wojtowicz suggests that exercise in youth is crucial for lifelong cognitive development and may delay Alzheimer’s symptoms in humans. His team divided 80 young rats into two groups, giving one group access to running wheels for six weeks. Months later, when tested for memory using a fear association with specific boxes, the rats that exercised in their youth remembered better which box was dangerous. Those that didn’t exercise froze equally in all scenarios, indicating poor memory. Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University adds that exercise promotes new brain cell growth, enhancing memory in older age.

Fitness really can be life-changing! There’s a nice article from the BBC that talks about a 71 year old woman diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis) who says since taking up powerlifting competitions ‘everything has changed’.

When she first started training she found her joints were stiff, and she couldn’t do a bodyweight squat, but now she feels fit and strong. Her only regret is that she wishes that she started 40 years ago.

Speaking to the journalist she says “the other lifters, they made me feel so welcome. It’s a really lovely community, people want the best for each other”.

It’s no secret that people often struggle finding motivation towards putting productivity towards fitness-related goals. Our founder Jon talks a lot about this topic in his book The Pop-Up Gym. From his experience working with a lot of busy professionals, he shares tips on how you can be productive and gain results, without having to take too much time away from other areas of your life. 🧠

‘’I’m going to show you how you can become fitter and healthier with a minimum of fuss. You won’t have to spend a lot of money on equipment, and this won’t take up a lot of your time. In fact, the whole fitness programme I have devised has been designed with busy people in mind.’ - Jon Denoris.

Sport of The Day: Joggling! 🤹 🏃

What is Joggling❓

Joggling is a unique sport that combines jogging (or running) with juggling. Participants, known as jogglers, simultaneously run and juggle at least three balls (or other objects) without dropping them. The goal is to complete a distance while maintaining the juggling pattern.

History of Joggling📜
The sport of joggling has been around since the late 1970s. It is often credited to Bill Giduz, who joggled a 5-mile race in 1975 and later popularized the sport through various events and media coverage. Giduz sadly passed away last month and according to his obituary used to juggle his kids as babies!

Over the years, joggling has gained a niche following and has been included in various running and juggling events.
