This is something I've been dreading having to write.

Sadly, Jade and I had to make the awful decision to say goodbye to Ethel. She's been with us for 13 years and is as much a part of our family as any person.

She changed my life. When I met her I was a teenager that was still scared of dogs having never had one growing up. I'm now a man who's job involves working with dogs on a daily basis.

She is, without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to me and was instantly beloved by everyone that met her. She was a truly special dog. She was calm, loving, gentle, funny and looked after us as much as we did her.

I feel like a part of me is missing at the moment. But I'm so thankful and feel so privileged to have known her, cared for her and made her life as happy as I possibly could have. Something that I know she did for me.

You can rest now. I love you, bestest girl ###xx

As some of you may know by now, this week is my final week as a full-time personal trainer.

Whilst I am looking forward to getting started in my new career, it is, of course, bittersweet to be leaving a role that I've enjoyed immensely over the last 10+ years.

I want to thank the various coaches I've had who've guided me through my career from getting my start in coaching kickboxing at 17 years old, becoming a personal trainer, and getting through university and taking up weightlifting. Without you, I wouldn't have become the coach I am today.

And, of course, I'd like to thank my fantastic clients for their loyalty and for allowing me to do something I love for a living. The outpouring of kind words recently has been overwhelming and reassuring that I've been able to provide a positive service to you.

If you want to chat about training or anything else, the offer will always be there.

The Romanian deadlift is one of the best exercises for strengthening the Hamstrings, glutes and back. Today I'm going to give you 3 quick tips on how to get the most out of this awesome movement.

Tip Number 1
Move your hips, not the bar.

From the top of the lift, initiate the movement by pushing your hips back rather than by lowering the bar towards the ground. I like to think about pushing my hips towards the point where the wall behind me meets the ceiling.

How low the bar ends up in relation to your legs is dependant on flexibility more so than good or bad technique so worry more about your hips and stretching the hamstrings than how low you can get the bar.

Tip 2
Use straps

This one is unrelated to the actual technique of the exercise but at some point, you'll probably be strong enough to lift a heavier weight or complete more reps than your hands are able to hold on to the bar.

Lifting straps remove this limitation and allow the target muscles of the exercise to be the true limiting factor as opposed to grip strength.

Tip 3
Take. Your. Time!

Nothing pains me more than seeing people load up too much weight and rushing through their set as quickly as possible with no regard for their technique.

A 2-4 second eccentric, or lowering phase, followed by a smooth change of direction and deliberate squeeze of the glutes and hamstrings at the top of each rep is the way to go here. Especially if your lower back is a bit fragile or you've had a prior injury.

Muscles respond to tension, not reps or weight on the bar. That's not to say you should intentionally go super light, but use a weight that you can control the entire tempo of the lift.
