How would it feel to feel more protected, provided for and encouraged? Not only when you have hard time face the world but at all timesβ¦
This may be the difference between responding to yourself with tough love and fierce compassion, whilst both of them might bring you the same result - you being able to stay accountable to yourself, they reinforce 2 different messages
Whilst one is pressuring and suppressive of any negative emotions (tough love)
The other offer more room for emotional presence AND encouragement for your future self (fierce compassion)
Embodying fierce compassion is about becoming that person for yourself that has your back and wants the best for you whilst truly caring for how you feel - the key word is CARE
The prompt I have for you is : How can you care for yourself and for your future self in the place you are in right now?
Hereβs how to do it:
1. Acknowledge where youβre at in that moment ((.e.: I really canβt be bothered to do anything today, I wish I could just stay in bed, Iβm really not okβ¦)
2. Offer and tap into tender compassion first - this may sound like : βThatβs really not fun, I can see this does not feel good for youβ (yes you are going to be talking to yourself and whilst this may feel uncomfortable at first, I need you to keep thinking about that part of you thatβs struggling in the meanwhile)
3. Immediately follow with fierce compassion - WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOURSELF IN THAT MOMENT THAT YOUR FUTURE SELF WILL BE GRATEFUL FOR?
- Is it little bit of grace?
- Is it less pressure?
- Is it saying yes to what feels difficult to do - moving your body, cleaning your house, feeding yourself, doing one task at a time
- Is it saying no to things that will just make it worse - seeing people, scrolling on social media, eating junk
REMEMBER this is a skill, so try to practise whenever you can
