Next up is Dave Wallace:

Sometimes, the decision you make through Clearing can change the entire course of your university experience.

After reaching a crossroads in his rowing career, Dave made the last-minute decision to join ULBC through Clearing to study Finance in London. Three years later, he had won Henley Royal Regatta, completed an undefeated season in the Championship 4+, and built friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s his story:

I will never forget the Sunday night of Henley Royal Regatta in 2024, everyone around me was celebrating after winning. I had been knocked out on the Wednesday. That night I promised myself that one day I would be the one celebrating. The following year, thanks to ULBC, this dream came true. I started rowing at Henley Rowing Club all the way back in 2016. My first ever 2k ergo was 11 minutes. After years of waking up every day at 5am to go jogging in the rain before school, I managed to row in the Fawley Challenge Cup and race for GB at the Coupe regatta. I knew I wasn’t done with the sport but was stuck about where to go next. I decided last minute to join ULBC and went through clearing to study finance in London. I have had the best 4 years of my life, and all the friendships and experiences that I value are becajuse of this decision. I achieved a lot in my first two years with UL and will never forget the lessons I learnt not just about rowing but about life too. After losing my seat in the top boat just before Henley two years in a row, I decided that the 2025 season would be the one where I was willing to crawl over broken glass to become the standard of athlete that was capable of winning Henley. A secret to life is that you become what you think about and I firmly believe that if you show up every day and refuse to give up, you will achieve more than you could ever hope for. Although I achieved my ultimate goal of winning Henley and had an undefeated season in the 4+, I would rather have lost every race with UL than won with another club.”

Next up Theo “Dog” Doyle tells his story:

Coming from a small rowing programme, Theo joined ULBC in the third eight in his first year. In just two years, he would go on to drop 25 seconds from his 2k erg score, progress through the squad, and earn a Henley Royal Regatta Red Box.

“I joined ULBC from a very small programme and spent four years rowing here whilst studying English at Queen Mary University of London before completing a PGCE in English at King’s College London. One of the highlights of my time at ULBC was the opportunity to progress from the club’s third eight to the Championship 4+, with an undefeated final season culminating in victory in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Along the way, I also won multiple BUCS Championship gold medals and international medals at various international regattas in Europe. ULBC provided the perfect environment to challenge myself both academically and athletically, whilst making friendships and memories that will stay with me for life. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and couldn’t think of anywhere better for anyone looking to combine top-level rowing with top-level studies.”

Over the next four days leading up to A-Level Results Day, we’ll be introducing several members of ULBC who are graduating this year.

Each of these athletes joined the University of London as freshers and have gone on to achieve incredible things from BUCS gold medals and Henley Red Boxes to representing GB on the international stage.

First up is Georgie Banton:

I have rowed at ULBC for five years whilst completing undergrad and masters degrees from UCL and King’s respectively.
During this time, I have also been fortunate enough to compete at the highest level of student rowing in the UK. This culminated in our crew winning Champ 8 gold at BUCS regatta this year, after achieving silver and bronze in previous years. I have also raced at HRR weekends and HWR semi finals as well as a top five overall finish at WEHORR. These achievements are things I could only have dreamt of when I joined as a fresher in 2021.

The support from ULBC towards my academics and rowing has meant that I was able to thrive in both areas. I can leave university with a top class education, great rowing results and, most importantly, friends for life.
Moving to London for university can be daunting at first, but the UL community of rowers, past and present, have made my five years at UL the most wonderful time. It really is a club for everyone, where students can achieve their best on and off the water.

Henley Royal Regatta | Women

The women’s squad enjoyed an outstanding Henley Royal Regatta, with five crews representing ULBC and four progressing to race on Friday, demonstrating the depth and quality of the programme.

Bridge Challenge Plate
Racing as a composite with Molesey Boat Club, the Bridge crew featured four ULBC athletes. Victories over the University of Miami and Yale University saw them progress to the final, where they defeated Thames Rowing Club to win the event, finishing within two seconds of the Remenham Challenge Cup time.

Island Challenge Cup
The pre-qualified Island eight opened with impressive wins over Imperial College London and ASR Nereus before meeting Brown A in the quarter-finals. Despite a determined performance, they were beaten by a crew that would go on to win the event.

Town Challenge Cup
Town A began with a commanding victory over Deutscher Ruder-Club von 1884 e.V. Hannover and Bonner Ruder-Gesellschaft e.V. before narrowly missing out to Nautilus A the following day. Town B also successfully pre-qualified and produced a strong performance against the Dutch U23 four, gaining valuable experience on the Henley stage.

Queen Victoria Challenge Cup
ULBC’s women’s quad faced an unfortunate draw, meeting the same crew they had raced in the Henley Women’s Regatta final. They raced with determination throughout and were proud to be part of the inaugural Queen Victoria Challenge Cup.

A huge thank you to and Stu Pearce for their outstanding leadership throughout another successful season. Congratulations to all of the athletes who represented ULBC at Henley Royal Regatta—we look forward to building on these performances and returning even stronger next year.

Henley Royal Regatta | Men

The men’s squad enjoyed an excellent Henley Royal Regatta, with two crews representing ULBC and delivering strong performances throughout the week.

Temple Challenge Cup

Entering the regatta as a seeded crew, Temple A opened their campaign with a composed victory over Newcastle University on Wednesday, extending to a length by the Barrier before easing down under the Stewards to progress comfortably.

Thursday saw a closely contested race against Trinity College, Hartford. After the American crew established an early lead, ULBC responded with a decisive move through the middle of the course to take the advantage, crossing the line ¾ of a length ahead.

On Friday, Temple A faced Cambridge in the quarter-finals. Remaining in contention through Fawley, the crew produced a determined performance but were ultimately beaten by the eventual winners of the event.

Prince Albert Challenge Cup

Having successfully progressed through the qualifying races, the Prince Albert crew lined up against the University of Melbourne on Wednesday. Following an earlier meeting at Marlow Regatta, ULBC anticipated a closely fought contest. The crew raced strongly throughout, ultimately finishing 1¼ lengths behind after an impressive performance.

Congratulations to all of the athletes who represented ULBC at Henley Royal Regatta, and thank you to and .moreno_ for their leadership and commitment throughout the season. We look forward to building on these performances in the year ahead.

ULBC X MOLESEY WIN THE BRIDGE CHALLENGE PLATE 2026

Our Bridge Plate composite featured 4 current ULBC athletes: Amelia Cataldi (c), Emily Hegarty (s), Saskia Delray (5), Jessie Martin (2) and entered Henley after wins at Ratzeberg and Henley Women’s Regatta. These athletes became the 51st UL crew to win HRR, the 20th to win an eights event.

More success came from our alumni, with UL alumni across 4 winning crews in the Thames, Wargrave, Wyfold and Remenham.
