Europe's oldest and most prestigious Judo and Martial Arts club

The Budokwai began as a Judo club and offers classes in Judo throughout the week. We also offer regular classes in Shotokan Karate, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu and Aikido as well as Hontai Yoshin Ryu Ju-Jitsu and Pilates. Our instructors are all highly qualified, experienced and able to offer a range of coaching and instruction for the compl

ete novice through to Olympic standard. Beginners are carefully taught techniques most suited to their ability and proceed up the grades towards the much-coveted Dan grade and Black Belt. The junior instructors are of the same high standard and the children's classes in Judo and Karate attract a great number of youngsters every week. For self-defence and supreme fitness nothing compares to Martial Arts and there is nowhere better to learn these skills than the Budokwai.

Happy St. George's Day!
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Did you know....
-St George wasn't English, and probably spoke Greek 🇬🇷
- He wasn't a knight, but was probably an officer in the Roman Army⚔️
- He was a martyr, killed for his Christian faith ✝️
-He never visited England, but was popular with the Medieval Kings. Edward III owned what he believed was a relic of St George's blood 🩸
- St. George's cross didn't become England's flag until the early 16th Century 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
- The legend of slaying a human-eating-dragon was desvied in the Middle Ages, some 500 years after his death 🐉
- The earliest evidence of St. George's existence was from mid 4th century Syria 🇸🇾
- According to various citations, St. George is also the patron saint of Genoa, Ethiopia, Catalonia, Moscow, Aragon, Beirut and Georgia amongst others including The Boy Scouts 🌍
- Throughout history, people turned to St. George for protection, including protection from plague, leprosy and to protect the English Army, as made famous by the battle cry from Shakespeare's Henry V. An apparition of St George is said to have appeared to soldiers to assist them from Mons during World War I. ⚕️
- In 1940, King George VI created a new award for those who demonstrate the greatest acts of heroism and courage when faced with extreme danger and named it The George Cross, which includes the image of St. George slaying the dragon. 🎖️
