This short clip is from my recent 7th Dan grading.

As part of the grading, Chris and I were required to demonstrate 30 techniques: 10 defences against Katana attacks and 20 techniques of our own choosing. For my selected techniques, I demonstrated techniques from Kishinjuku Aiki Jujutsu.

The two techniques shown in this video were the final techniques I performed. I chose them in memory of the late Kojima Shuhan, whom I had the privilege of watching demonstrate them during the Kyoto Seminar in 2018.

Looking at my own performance reminds me just how much I still have to learn to approach the standard that Kojima Shuhan set. His skill, precision, and presence continue to inspire my training.

I would also like to once again express my sincere thanks to everyone who acted as my Uke throughout the grading.

I would like to echo Chris's words and extend my sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this achievement possible.

Firstly, my deepest gratitude to Shihan Kevin McKane for conducting such a thorough and challenging grading, and to Sensei Lee Paine for organising the event. Thank you also to Sensei Lindsay Comens for his patience and expertise in teaching us Kendo no Kata and the Itto Ryu Kata over the past 18 months.

A special thank you to all the students and training partners who travelled to support us and acted as Uke throughout the day. Your effort, commitment, and encouragement were greatly appreciated.

I would also like to thank Shihan Chris Lacy. We started our London Ju Jitsu journey together many years ago, and despite now following different paths, we have remained training partners and good friends. When I was hesitant about attempting 7th Dan, Chris encouraged me to take on the challenge, and I am grateful for his support throughout the preparation and grading process.

Achieving 7th Dan is a significant milestone, but more importantly it is a reminder of the many teachers, training partners, and students who have contributed to my development over the years. I am humbled to have reached this level and look forward to continuing the journey of learning and teaching.

I’m incredibly proud to share that Shihan Salur Onural and I both passed our 7th Dan Gradings yesterday. Thanks so much to Shihan Kevin McKane of Waregachi Ju Jitsu for grading us and Sensei Lee Paine also of Waregachi for organising it. Huge thanks also to Sensei Lindsay Comens of Hakuho Ju Jutsu for teaching us Kendo No Kata and the first 10 Itto Ryu Kata which were part of our syllabus over the last 18 months! It was a very tough grading but that’s the way it should be! Thanks also to all of the students who came a fair distance to Uke and also to those who were injured but still made the trip to be there! Finally for me it is a huge honour to have achieved this grade as my original teacher Soke Billy Fenner held this rank when I started my Ju Jitsu journey in 1985 so to have reached this level is truly humbling.

“Nukite (Extracting Hand) is not a practical technique but a fundamental method for refining skill.”

From Chōfū (seal posture), step onto your opponent’s yin meridian line, turning the palm upward to connect with their body, unbalancing and extracting.

The Shoden-waza (initial transmission techniques) of Nukite must be practiced repetitively from the very start of training. One learns its use through the body, and it applies to every technique. Without learning Nukite, it becomes difficult to apply any waza effectively

One year on from Kojima Makoto Shuhan's passing. We offered a moment of silence before practice, and continue to train in his spirit, with gratitude and respect. Thank you to everyone who joined us in practice today, and to those who couldn't attend but shared their warm thoughts in remembrance.

I was privileged to take part in the Shigeyoshi Seminar 2025.

Thank you, Sensei Guy Preston, for organising this meaningful event and commemorating the passing of the late Shuhan Kojima Makoto. You also honoured the memory of Kyoshi Mike Johnson, marking the 10th anniversary of his passing.

Without Kyoshi Mike Johnson, I wouldn’t have become part of the Kishinjuku family or had the opportunity to pursue Shuhan Kojima’s legacy.

I am grateful to both.

I am very pleased to say, after training with both Yamasaki Sensei and Kasetani Senseit, that Kishin Juku is in good hands.

The extra training time really shows the power of Kishin Juku. Training with both has given me new insights and ideas for training the students at Tokueikan.

Kojima Shuhan would be proud and happy with both Yamasaki Sensei and Kastani Sensei for keeping Kshin Juku's legacy alive

Today marked the first Tokueikan practice since the passing of Kojima Shuhan. We observed a one-minute silence in his honour and paid our respects in front of the scroll bearing the four fundamental principles of Kishinjuku, written by Kojima Shuhan himself. I must admit this was an extremely emotional moment for me.

We trained today as if we were in front of Kojima Shuhan.
