✨MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY✨ Eva Evdokimova

“Artistry comes with maturity and experience.”

Today we celebrate the extraordinary Eva Evdokimova, a ballerina whose career embodied the idea that a dancer’s artistry is always evolving.

Born in Geneva, Evdokimova trained at The Royal Ballet School before becoming the first non Danish dancer to join the Royal Danish Ballet. She later became prima ballerina of the Berlin Opera Ballet and a leading ballerina with London Festival Ballet, now English National Ballet. Her international career took her to many of the world’s great stages, and she enjoyed a celebrated partnership with Rudolf Nureyev that lasted for more than 15 years.

Renowned particularly for the Romantic repertoire, including Giselle and La Sylphide, Evdokimova combined purity of classical technique with a deeply expressive quality. Her repertoire ultimately encompassed around 150 roles, spanning classical and contemporary ballet, and she was recognised during her career as a Prima Ballerina Assoluta.

Perhaps most inspiring is that her artistry was not defined by youth alone. Even later in her performing life, critics celebrated the depth and maturity she brought to the stage.

A lovely reminder for all of us that ballet is not simply about what the body can achieve today. Musicality, expression, understanding and artistry continue to grow through every class, every performance and every year we dance.

✨ MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY ✨

As we look ahead to our next Ballet Technical workshop this September, it’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on one of ballet’s greatest pioneers, Carlo Blasis.

Every time we step into a technical ballet class, we’re building on principles that Carlo Blasis helped define. As a renowned teacher, choreographer, and theorist, he believed that exceptional artistry could only be achieved through exceptional technique.

His writings established many of the principles that continue to underpin classical ballet training, from alignment and balance to precision, control, and the importance of a structured class.

His influence would later inspire the development of the Cecchetti Method, shaping generations of dancers around the world.

What makes Blasis’ philosophy so inspiring is that he never saw technique as an end in itself. For him, strong technique created freedom. The more secure a dancer became in their foundations, the more confidently they could move, communicate, and perform with artistry and expression.

As we prepare for our upcoming technical class, it’s worth remembering that every tendu, every plié, every balance, and every correction has a purpose.

Technical work isn’t simply about perfecting steps, it’s about building the confidence and freedom to dance at your very best.

Motivation for today:
Never underestimate the power of returning to the fundamentals. Strong foundations create beautiful dancers, and every class is another step towards becoming the artist you aspire to be.

✨MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY ✨

This week we celebrate the extraordinary legacy of Lyudmila Safronova, a legendary master who served as a vital, direct link to the very foundations of classical ballet history.

Born in 1929, Safronova graduated from the Vaganova Academy in 1947 under the direct tutelage of Agrippina Vaganova herself.

She went on to enjoy a brilliant performing career as a Principal dancer with the Maly Opera Theatre and the Saratov Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, where she was trusted with leading classical roles as well as groundbreaking contemporary creations.

Her international impact truly flourished when she returned to her roots to teach. For over four decades, she served as the oldest-standing professor at the Vaganova Academy, guarding the purest traditions of the Vaganova method.

Throughout her elite pedagogical career, she trained over 60 world-renowned ballerinas, including icons like Evgenia Obraztsova, Olesya Novikova, and Alina Somova, who went on to conquer the stages of the Mariinsky Theatre, American Ballet Theatre, and English National Ballet.

Her life and career remind us that true artistry is built on a deep respect for our roots, an unyielding commitment to the tiniest details, and the passion to pass excellence down to the next generation.

Join us this October for an immersive day of classical ballet at the Royal Ballet & Opera, accompanied throughout by live piano 🎹 wth the wonderful James Golborn.

Following the wonderful response to our Adult Spring Intensive, we’re delighted to present a brand new experience created especially for adult dancers.

The day begins with a classical ballet class before journeying beneath the waves to discover the enchanting Waltz of Aspicia from The Pharaoh’s Daughter.

After lunch, we’ll explore the joyful Henriette’s Variation from Raymonda, revealing two beautifully contrasting works by the legendary Marius Petipa.

✨MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY ✨

This week we celebrate the extraordinary career of Yoko Morish*ta, a pioneer who helped bring Japanese ballet to the international stage.

Born in Hiroshima in 1948, Morish*ta began ballet at just three years old. At the age of twelve she moved to Tokyo to pursue professional training, before continuing her studies in the United States in 1969. In 1971 she joined the Matsuyama Ballet Company, where she would go on to become one of Japan’s most celebrated ballerinas and later its artistic leader.

Her international career flourished throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She won the Gold Medal at the prestigious Varna International Ballet Competition in 1974, received multiple Japan Academy awards, performed for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977, and in 1981 became the first Japanese ballerina to perform at the Palais Garnier in Paris. From 1983 she partnered the legendary Rudolf Nureyev, further establishing her reputation on the world stage.

Alongside her performing career, Morish*ta has served as an international competition judge, become a Member of the Japan Art Academy and received the Praemium Imperiale, one of the world’s highest honours for artistic achievement.

Her journey reminds us that great artistry is built through years of dedicated training, continual learning and the courage to represent your country on the world’s greatest stages.

This week, The Dancers Studio London is celebrating the artistry of Charline Giezendanner, Sujet at the Paris Opéra Ballet.

Born in Besançon, France, Charline entered the Paris Opéra Ballet School in 1994, where she trained in the renowned French School, celebrated for its elegance, musicality and precision.

After seven years of dedicated training, she joined the Paris Opéra Ballet in 2001, progressing through the ranks to become Coryphée in 2005 and Sujet in 2009, later receiving the prestigious AROP Prize for Dance.

Throughout her career she has performed an impressive range of repertoire, including Swanhilda in Pierre Lacotte’s Coppélia, Gamzatti in La Bayadère, Olga in Onegin, together with featured roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, Raymonda, Paquita, Cinderella and many works by choreographers such as George Balanchine, John Neumeier, William Forsythe and Wayne McGregor.

Her journey reminds us that a successful ballet career is built through consistency, patience and a commitment to continual growth. Every class, every correction and every performance becomes another opportunity to develop as an artist.

As you begin a new week, remember that progress is rarely measured in a single day. Trust your training, embrace the process and keep showing up. The smallest improvements today become tomorrow’s artistry.

✨ MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY ✨

Some of the greatest advances in ballet came from those who dared to challenge convention. Long before ballet became the art form we know today, one remarkable woman proved that progress begins with courage.

Marie-Anne de Cupis de Camargo was one of the true pioneers of classical ballet. Making her debut at the Paris Opéra in 1726, she captivated audiences with dazzling speed, precision, and athleticism at a time when much of the virtuosic vocabulary was reserved for male dancers. She became the first woman credited with performing the entrechat quatre, demonstrating that technical brilliance knew no boundaries.

Camargo also helped transform ballet itself. She popularised the use of flat slippers instead of heeled shoes and embraced shorter skirts that allowed greater freedom of movement, innovations that enabled dancers to move with greater confidence and artistry. These changes not only enhanced performance, but helped shape the evolution of classical ballet for generations to come.

Her legacy reminds us that progress is often born from those willing to think differently. Rather than accepting limitations, she expanded what audiences believed was possible and inspired countless dancers who followed in her footsteps.

As we celebrate the birthday week of one of Britain’s greatest ballet legends, Dame Beryl Grey, we are reminded of what can be achieved through talent, dedication, courage, and an unwavering love of dance.

Dame Beryl Grey’s journey was extraordinary from the very beginning. Joining Sadler’s Wells Ballet at just 14 years old, she quickly rose through the ranks, performing Odette Odile in Swan Lake on her 15th birthday and dancing the title role in Giselle at only 16.

These remarkable achievements were not simply the result of natural ability, but of discipline, determination, and an exceptional work ethic.

Throughout her career, she broke new ground for British ballet. She became the first British ballerina to dance with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and the first to perform in China, helping to build cultural bridges through the universal language of dance. Her artistry, elegance, and musicality inspired audiences around the world and established her as one of the defining ballerinas of her generation.

Yet her impact extended far beyond the stage. As Artistic Director of London Festival Ballet, now English National Ballet, she transformed the company, championed artistic excellence, nurtured future generations of dancers, and helped secure its international reputation. Her lifelong commitment to dance continued through education, leadership, and advocacy, shaping the future of ballet in Britain and beyond.
