Art in motion. 🩶

This Sunday, we welcomed back our dear friend and talented artist, Dr Matthew James Eve Matthew Eve, to The Dancers Studio London, where he created a beautiful new collection of sketches inspired by our dancers.

Set within the inspiring studios of the Royal Ballet & Opera, and accompanied by live piano music from James Golborn James Golborn, it was a wonderful opportunity to bring together dance, music and visual art in one creative space.

Matthew’s work captures the elegance, energy and expression of ballet from a fresh perspective, reminding us how one art form can inspire another.

A special thank you to Matthew for sharing his talent, and to our wonderful dancers for providing the inspiration.

✨ MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY✨

This Monday, we celebrate Claire Motte, an artist whose formidable technique and strong personality brought distinction to the Paris Opera Ballet.

Trained at the Paris Opera Ballet School with Carlotta Zambelli and Serge Lifar, Motte joined the company at just 14, became a première danseuse at 18 and was named étoile in 1960. Her striking stage presence inspired Roland Petit to create the role of Esmeralda for her in Notre-Dame de Paris.

Her artistry extended across classical and contemporary repertoire, with roles created in works by Lifar and Petit, alongside televised performances in The Firebird and Phèdre.

In 1983, Rudolf Nureyev, a friend since before his defection in 1961, appointed her ballet mistress of the Paris Opera Ballet.
Although her life was sadly cut short, her contribution lives on through the repertoire she helped shape and the dancers she guided.

Her career invites us to consider what we bring to our own dancing beyond the steps: personality, curiosity and the confidence to make a movement our own. This week, give your technique thoughtful attention, and allow your individuality room to emerge.

The Ballet Technical is designed for dancers who want the time and space to focus on the detail of their technique, strengthening foundations while developing greater clarity, coordination and confidence in their work.

The session follows the natural progression of a full classical ballet class, beginning with a focused barre, moving into centre practice, and culminating in bespoke enchaînements that bring together the technical material explored throughout the workshop.

Led by The Dancers Studio London Director, Damien Lee Stirk, with live piano accompaniment from James Golborn, the workshop offers detailed, considered training within the inspiring surroundings of the Royal Ballet and Opera.

Beginning with classical ballet class accompanied by live piano, we’ll spend the day exploring two contrasting works from Marius Petipa’s repertoire.

From the flowing lyricism and expressive port de bras of the Waltz of Aspicia from The Pharaoh’s Daughter to the elegance, musicality and classical charm of Henriette’s Variation from Raymonda.

A chance to discover repertoire rarely encountered in the studio, with time to explore the choreography, musicality and artistry of each variation.

Open to dancers of all genders.

General level, ages 18+

✨ MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY ✨

This week we celebrate Jean Yves Lormeau, the distinguished French danseur étoile whose elegance and classical artistry made him an important figure at the Paris Opera Ballet.

Born in Da Lat, Vietnam, in 1952, Lormeau trained at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris before joining the Paris Opera Ballet in 1971.

He progressed steadily through the company’s celebrated hierarchy, becoming coryphée in 1973, sujet in 1974 and premier danseur in 1977, before being named danseur étoile in 1981.

Throughout his career, Lormeau performed many of ballet’s great leading roles, including Albrecht in Giselle, Siegfried in Swan Lake, James in La Sylphide, Solor in La Bayadère and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Renowned for his partnering, he danced alongside many of the leading ballerinas of his generation, including Sylvie Guillem.

Following his performing career, Lormeau brought his experience back into the studio as a teacher and ballet master. He taught at the Paris Conservatoire and later took his knowledge internationally, including serving as Artistic Director of the ballet of the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro.

From student to étoile, and from the stage to the studio, his career reminds us that a dancer’s artistry continues to develop, evolve and inspire long beyond performance.

Yesterday, we returned to the beautiful studios of the Royal Ballet and Opera for our first workshop of the new season.

We had the particular delight of welcoming Dr Matthew Eve Matthew Eve into the studio, who joined us to draw live throughout the class. Watching his sketches emerge as the dancers moved through the afternoon was such a treat, capturing fleeting moments of line, movement and expression through another artistic lens.

James Golborn’s James Golborn beautiful live piano accompaniment provided the perfect soundtrack to an afternoon of movement, creativity and connection.

A very special way to begin our new season at the Royal Ballet and Opera, and a lovely reminder of the creativity that happens when movement, music and visual art share the same studio.

A new season begins. ✨

This Sunday, we return to the Royal Ballet & Opera for our first Ballet Technical workshop of the new season.

We’ll be dancing in the stunning MacMillan Studio, high above Covent Garden, with the London skyline and views across the Piazza as our backdrop.

A workshop dedicated to classical ballet technique, musicality and artistry, accompanied throughout by live piano with James Golborn ✨ 🎹 ✨
