Steal my pre-shot routine. ⛳️

You don’t need to copy my golf swing… but you can copy my routine.

If you want to play more consistent golf, you need a consistent approach before every shot.

Here’s mine:

✅ 1. Two practice swings
To get a feel for the shot I want to hit.

✅ 2. Visualise success
Stand behind the ball and picture the perfect shot. Not the bunker. Not the water. Not the shank. Just the shot you want to create.

✅ 3. Club first, body second
Aim the clubface at your target first, then build your stance around it. The club controls the start line, so let that lead the process.

Then…

🏌️ Hit the shot.
👍 Accept the result.
🚶 Move on.
😊 Enjoy this great game.

What’s one thing that’s always part of your pre-shot routine? Let me know in the comments! 👇

💾 this if you want longer drives

One of the biggest keys is keeping your upper body behind the golf ball through impact.

When your upper body moves in front of the ball, you’re much more likely to:
❌ Come down too steep
❌ Slice the ball
❌ Add excess spin
❌ Lose valuable distance

Instead, keep your upper body behind the ball. This helps you:
✅ Shallow the club
✅ Hit up on the golf ball (positive angle of attack)
✅ Launch it higher with less spin
✅ Maximise distance off the tee

It’s a simple concept that can make a huge difference.

Why don’t you compress the golf ball? 🤔

Most golfers think the problem is at impact…

It usually starts much earlier.

Two of the biggest reasons you struggle to achieve shaft lean and compress the golf ball:

✅ 1. An open clubface in the downswing
If the face is open, your brain has one priority: square it before impact. That often means throwing away your wrist angles, early releasing the club and losing compression.

✅ 2. Poor pressure shift
Without moving pressure towards the target, your body often spins instead of shifting. The club gets out of position, forcing another last-second recovery to square the face.

Get these two pieces right, and suddenly that strong pre-impact position—lead hand over the trail thigh—becomes much easier to achieve. And when that improves, shaft lean and ball-first contact usually follow.

Compression isn’t created at impact… it’s created by everything that happens before it.

💬 Which one do you struggle with most: clubface control or pressure shift?

🏆 Champion Golfer of the Year, Ryan Fox.

One thing really stood out…

He has a huge amount of right side bend and shaft lean through impact. It’s a very unique move, and it’s probably not something you’d teach the average golfer.

Why?

Because it’s a match-up.

Ryan uses a very strong grip, with both hands rotated well to the right. If he released the club in a more conventional way, the clubface would close dramatically and the ball would be heading a long way left.

Instead, his impact alignments perfectly balance his grip, allowing him to deliver the club consistently at an elite level.

💡 This is a great reminder that golf swings shouldn’t be copied in isolation.

Tour players don’t just have unusual movements for the sake of it—they have combinations that work together. Copying one piece of a swing without understanding why it exists can often make your own game worse.

For most golfers, I’d still recommend building a more conventional grip and a more neutral impact position. It’s easier to repeat, easier to coach, and usually leads to more consistent golf.

🎥 In this video, I explain why Ryan Fox’s swing works for him—and why understanding your own swing match-ups is far more important than trying to copy the latest tour winner.

⛳️ Wrist Hinge Made Simple

One of the most common faults I see is golfers trying to create their backswing by rolling their forearms instead of hinging their wrists.

This simple alignment stick drill gives you instant visual feedback. 👌

🏌️‍♂️ Set up with an alignment stick running down your lead side and swing until your lead arm is parallel to the ground.

✅ Ideally, the butt of the club (or alignment stick) should point along the ball-to-target line.

Here’s what you’ll often see:

❌ Pointing towards the horizon? You’ve rolled your forearms and created a flatter backswing.

❌ Pointing left of the golf ball? You probably haven’t hinged your wrists enough.

✅ Pointing on the target line? Much better! You’re creating the wrist hinge that helps the club set correctly.

This isn’t really a drill for smashing golf balls. It’s all about creating the correct feel and understanding where the club should be in space. Hit a few little half-swings if you like, but the real value comes from rehearsing the movement until it feels natural.

Small changes like this can make a huge difference to your strike, consistency and clubface control.

Back in the golf studio today

The two things I’m working on right now are:

🏌️‍♂️ More wrist hinge – using a wrist hinge trainer attached to the grip to exaggerate the feeling of setting the club correctly in the backswing.

🏌️‍♂️ A more neutral swing path – using the positioned just inside the golf ball to stop the club approaching too much from the inside.

Once I’d spent time with each training aid, they came straight off.

That’s the important part.

Training aids should help you create a movement, not become something you rely on forever. The real test is whether you can reproduce that movement without them.

To check that, I monitored my numbers, focusing on:
📊 Spin Axis – to make sure my club face was under control.
📊 Club Path – to see if the Strike Wedge work had helped me return to a more neutral delivery.

Practice isn’t always exciting, but this is how lasting improvements are made. Work on one thing, measure it, test it, and repeat.

Get A LITTLE better every day. 💚⛳️
