POWER YOGA - A SCIENCE BASED APPROACH
As we age, it’s super important that we keep ourselves as strong and flexible as we can – as both of these contribute to a better quality of life. And YOGA - especially modern fitness based Yoga can help us achieve this.
A SCIENCE BASED APPROACH TO YOGA – means that my classes are mainly focused on this more modern take on yoga - fusing the traditional elements - such as the conscious breath and the poses (asanas) with powerful and challenging flowing sequences specifically designed to increase your strength, flexibility and balance in both the body and mind.
If you were looking for a class where you can just lie around on the floor and do a bit of gentle stretching - my classes are probably not for you! However, if you want to really build up your strength, increase your range of movement, balance the body, keep your brain healthy AND learn how to focus, be in the moment, deal with stress and be in tune with your own body - then this class will give you all that and more.
It’s an ALL LEVELS class and you don't need to be strong, flexible or able to stand on one leg to join! What you do need is to be WILLING to give it go! You'll probably suck at it for the first few weeks, but you'll be surprised how fast you can build up your strength and gain more movement and flexibility. I encourage all my students to work WITH their bodies by offering lots of variations and options so that you can work at your own level as you gradually increase your fitness and strength. You WILL find it challenging. If it doesn't challenge you - it won't change you.
YOGA PRACTICE - NOT PERFORMANCE!
The classes are very friendly and relaxed and it really doesn't matter if you can't reach as far up (or down) as you would like, if you wobble or even fall over in a one legged balance as it's all part of the fun of learning and getting fitter. I use a class structuring style called a Slow Build or Ladder Flow - which means that we revisit lots of the poses during the one class, adding on a bit more each time as we move through the asanas (poses) with a flowing motion, following the breath, firing up our core muscles, building heat, strength and focus. There is some mat based work and the last five minutes is set aside for relaxation, but much of the class is standing.
