When the teacher corrects the dancer next to you but skips you… 👀😂

It’s completely natural, particularly when dancers are younger, to think that not receiving a correction means “I must be doing everything right!”

As they progress, though, dancers learn to see corrections very differently.

Individual feedback isn’t criticism. It’s a teacher saying, “Here’s the next thing that will help you improve.” ✨

Learning to listen to a correction, apply it and keep working at it is a huge part of becoming an independent dancer. Eventually, being given something specific to work on becomes something dancers actively WANT. 💕

Although we’ll still allow them that brief “Am I… better than everyone?” moment first. 😂

Thursday means Ballet + Tap! 🩰👞✨

From ballet barre to tap sounds, our Thursday dancers get to work on two VERY different styles of technique. 💕

Pointed toes one minute, noisy feet the next. 😂

First dance class coming up? Save this one! 🩰✨

Starting something new is a BIG adventure when you’re only 3 or 4, and we know parents often have just as many questions as their little dancers. 💕

What should they wear? What do you need to bring? Can you watch? And what happens if they spend half the class watching everyone else instead of joining in? 👀

Our Tinies Trial Class Guide has you covered. Swipe through for everything you need to know before their first class. 👉

And most importantly, please don’t worry about whether your child will join in perfectly on day one. Some leap straight in, some watch first, some need reassurance, and some decide halfway through that they’d quite like Mum back, actually. 😂 It’s all completely normal.

Their first class is simply a chance to explore, get to know us and see what they think. 💗

Save this for trial day! ✨

“She is very patient around the kids and oversees the classroom thoroughly.” 💕

Such lovely words to receive for this week’s Testimonial Tuesday.

Teaching young children takes a LOT of preparation, energy, imagination and, as Lalinnara very accurately noticed, quite a few props! 😂✨

But the bit we love most? Hearing that her daughter enjoys coming to class.

We want children to learn and progress, but especially in those early years, we also want them to associate dance with joy, confidence and a place they’re excited to come back to each week. 🩰💕

Thank you, Lalinnara, for such a thoughtful review.

Why do we ask children to make up their own dances? 🤔

It might look like they’ve simply been given some music and told to have fun, but there’s a surprising amount of learning happening. ✨

Creating choreography asks children to make decisions, listen to music, remember sequences, solve problems, communicate their ideas and negotiate with other people when working in a group.

Most importantly, it teaches them that their own creative ideas have value. 💕

We absolutely want to teach our students strong technique and how to reproduce movement accurately. But we also want to develop dancers who can think, create and make choices for themselves.

That’s why creativity has a place in our classrooms too. ✨

Think you have to start dancing when you’re tiny? Absolutely not. 💕

Some of our students begin their dance journey at 18 months old. Others discover dance later in childhood or as teenagers. And some walk into an adult ballet class having wanted to try it for years. 🩰✨

There is no perfect age to begin. There’s simply the age when you’re ready to start.

At Theative, we have classes from toddlers through to teens, plus Adult Beginner Ballet, all here in Streatham.

Because the joy of dancing really doesn’t have an age limit. 💙

🚀✨ SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT: Our newest little space explorers! 👽🩰

From dancing with Mummy or Daddy by their side to walking into class ALL BY THEMSELVES! 🥹💕

Our newest Tinies have recently graduated from our Parent & Toddler classes into their very own Core Dance Combo class with Miss Ash, and just LOOK at them go! 🌟

This week, our little dancers were blasting off into space, discovering tiny aliens, flying through the stars and bouncing around their very own planets! 🪐🚀

But amongst all the giggles, imagination and space adventures, something rather wonderful is happening…

💕 They’re learning to come into class independently.
👂 They’re practising listening and taking turns.
🌈 They’re making their own creative choices.
🤝 They’re building relationships with their teacher and new dance friends.
🌟 And they’re discovering just how much they can do all by themselves!

These might seem like little things to us grown-ups, but when you’re only 3 or 4, they’re HUGE milestones. 🥹

We couldn’t be prouder of how our newest Tinies are settling in, and we can’t wait to see their confidence continue to blossom.

Little dancers. BIG adventures. 💕✨

They might be tiny, but there’s a LOT happening in these classes. 🥹💕

For some children, it’s their very first class. Their first teacher. Their first little dance friends. Maybe even their first experience of doing something independently from their grown-up. ✨

That’s why our Toddler & Tinies classes are about so much more than learning dance steps.

We play. We imagine. We build confidence. We navigate big feelings. We celebrate little victories. We make memories together. And, somewhere amongst all of that, they learn to dance too. 🩰🥰

Swipe through for a few of the reasons parents love starting their child’s dance journey with us. 👉💕

Little dancers. Big beginnings. ✨

A little ballet homework for you. 🩰✨

If you’re learning Grand Plié, save this video and come back to practise along with us at home.

There’s more happening in a Grand Plié than simply bending and straightening the knees. We’re thinking about turnout, alignment, posture, control and coordinating the movement of the heels, all at the same time. 👀

The secret? Slow, careful practice and LOTS of repetition. 💕

Save this one for your next at-home ballet practice. 🔖
