Il 13 giugno 1799, giorno in cui si celebra il Santo di Padova, i napoletani spodestarono San Gennaro per eleggere Sant'Antonio a protettore della città. Durante l'occupazione francese e la nascita della Repubblica Napoletana (1799), il generale Championnet impose la liquefazione del sangue del Santo per legittimare il nuovo ordine politico davanti al popolo. I sanfedisti (le truppe borboniche) accusarono quindi San Gennaro di essere "giacobino" e di parteggiare per gli invasori.L’Inno dei Sanfedisti – testo
