Postcards from South Africa šŸ’Œ

This trip hasn’t been going to plan so far for a number of reasons, but it’s still amazing to be in this beautiful place šŸ’•

Moments before disaster struck! 😱

Never thought I’d seriously sprain my foot less than 24 hours into a two week holiday šŸ™ƒ looks like running and hiking are out, and sitting around drinking wine is in! There could be worse things I guess? 🫣

I was lucky enough to recently spend another week , diving into my writing without any obstacles. There’s just something magical about running through the Scottish Highlands at sunrise with no one but the cows for company. Both the weather and the landscapes are so changeable that every minute, there is something new to appreciate.

Being able to move through nature is the biggest fuel for creativity, in my experience. A run through London can clear the head, but a run through the woods brings a wealth of new, unexplored ideas.

After so long, the end of this draft is finally in sight. If only I had another week in Scotland!

16 WEEKS TO YOUR BEST MARATHON
WEEK SIX: ON THE RUN NUTRITION

One of the most dreaded occurrences when it comes to racing a half or full marathon is ā€œhitting the wall,ā€ aka ā€œbonking.ā€ This is when the body runs out of stored glycogen, resulting in severe fatigue and a sudden drop off in pace. It’s the point when most people want to throw in the towel and stop! The good news is that there are ways to avoid this happening to you.

The cross country season closed out with a bang (or a squelch?) yesterday at Lloyd Park! Every year, it’s our muddiest event by far and this was no exception 🤣

The team did amazingly well - ladies finished third place overall in the Surrey League, and the men finished second! 🄳

I’m pleased with my performance as well - finished 8th on the team, which is my best result of the whole season šŸ™Œ I guess mud and I really get along 🤣

The worst part is when cleaning your clothes and shoes afterwards takes as long as running the actual race šŸ˜…

16 WEEKS TO YOUR BEST MARATHON
WEEK FIVE: INJURIES AND ILLNESS

It’s only the lucky few that will get to the end of a marathon training cycle without ever having to deal with injuries, niggles or illness. But the big questions are - when do you rest, and when do you run through? And if do have to take time out, how should you resume your training plan?

That feeling when you can get back to two of your favourite things: trails & tales šŸ˜

Had my longest run in quite a while and was pleasantly surprised at how cruisy it felt! But perhaps that’s because I spent the miles listening to the fourth book in the Red Rising series, Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. It’s so good, but so stressful 🫣

Has anyone else read this series? I so badly want to talk to someone about it! 😫

16 WEEKS TO YOUR BEST MARATHON

WEEK FOUR: PACE OR EFFORT?

The big question when it comes to your training plan. Should all your runs be done to a specific pace, or should you work to effort instead?

Does anyone else find it hard to get into a rhythm at the beginning of the year? There’s all this talk of New Year’s resolutions and big goals, but to me, it always feels like the first few weeks are all about playing catch up after taking time off around the holidays šŸ˜…

This is the first week I felt like I’ve finally gotten into the groove with everything and am managing to spend some time focusing on my own training, rather than writing everyone else’s! It was my first time back down at the track in a while, for some soggy 3 minute intervals. There’s lots of work to do from a fitness perspective, but I have to start somewhere šŸ’Ŗ

How’s your training been in 2026 so far?

16 WEEKS TO YOUR BEST MARATHON

WEEK THREE: DON’T NEGLECT YOUR S&C

Strength training (noun): a runner’s least favourite activity, often avoided like it’s the plague.

26.2 miles is a long way to run, and your body needs to be prepared to cope with the demands of the distance (and the months of training beforehand!). Strength training will help make your body stronger and more resilient to the demands of training and racing.

The good news is that you don’t need to spend hours in the gym to reap the results. Check out the slides above to find out how šŸ‘†

Felt good to be back racing cross country on my favourite course last weekend! Only a minute slower than the last time I did this race, which I’m pretty pleased with seeing as I haven’t done any XC specific training this year 😊

Now only the mud-fest of Lloyd Park to go for the rest of the season šŸ˜…

16 WEEKS TO YOUR BEST MARATHON

WEEK TWO: EASY MEANS EASY!

You’re probably reading this, thinking ā€œwell, duh!ā€ But this one of the most common areas I see runners going wrong.

The point of running easy is to build endurance by strengthening your aerobic base. Running your easy runs too quickly will impact your recovery times, making you more susceptible to overtraining and injury.

ā€˜Easy’ should be an effort, rather than a pace. With the rise of apps like Strava, it’s hard not to play the comparison game with other runners you know. Do your best to only worry about your own running, rather than what anyone else is doing! You’ll know that by taking your easy runs as gently as your body demands, you’re giving yourself the best shot at a successful race day.
