Your instructor can see a lot.
They can observe your alignment, your control, your range of movement, your breathing and how your body responds to an exercise.
But thereās one thing they canāt see: how that movement actually feels in your body.
Two people can perform the same exercise and experience it completely differently. What feels strong and challenging for one person might feel uncomfortable or unusual for someone else. And sometimes, what youāre feeling may not match what your instructor is describing at all.
Thatās why communication matters.
If something feels uncomfortable, too intense, pinchy, unstable, or simply different from what you expected, tell your instructor. Equally, if youāre unsure where youāre supposed to feel an exercise, ask.
Youāre not interrupting the class or doing anything wrong by speaking up. That information helps your instructor understand what they canāt see from the outside and, where appropriate, adjust the movement, offer another variation or explain what youāre working towards.
Pilates isnāt about silently following instructions and trying to make your body fit the exercise.
Good teaching is a conversation between what your instructor can see and what you can feel.
And the more we know about what youāre experiencing, the better we can support the way you move.
