Hormonal fluctuations that occur in the female public throughout the menstrual cycle can directly influence performance, as well as acute responses, recovery and, consequently, long-term results.
The objective of a recently published systematic review with meta-analysis was to evaluate exercise-induced muscle damage at different stages of the menstrual cycle of women with regular menstruation.
Nineteen studies that demonstrated differences between the phases of the cycle for muscle damage markers were included in the analysis: Delayed onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and reduced muscle strength, with no differences in creatine kinase.
Greater muscle pain, as well as greater reductions in muscle strength were observed for the initial follicular phase (1st-5th days of the cycle), than for the other phases.
This is because at this stage, women have low concentrations of s*x hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) and would be more vulnerable to muscle damage.
Based on these results, the authors recommend that lighter training loads, as well as lower frequencies and longer recovery periods can be applied during the initial follicular phase.
