The Rugby Football League's illustrative gradings for 2025 have been released and we see a return of Wakefield Trinity to the Rugby Super League. This will again concentrate the core of teams in the traditional northern heartlands at the expense of the London Broncos RL and Toulouse Olympique XIII.

It's an interesting 12-year experiment, and at this stage, it will be difficult to predict exactly how much fluidity we will see between the Super League and the Championship.

The Ruby Super League map has been updated to show the teams for the 2025 competition.

A ton of sports leagues wrapped up in Sep/Oct so there are a lot of new champions to update, on the national champions page.

- Wigan Warriors - take title number 24 and make it back-to-back championships in the English Super Rugby League.

- Penrith Panthers - take title number 6 and make it 4 back-to-back in the Australian National Rugby League.

- Brisbane Lions - take title number 4 in the Australian Football League.

- Surrey Cricket - take title number 23 and make it back-to-back-back English Country Cricket Championships.

- St Lucia Kings - take their first title in the Caribbean Premier League (Cricket) after 12 attempts.

I've updated the English Premier League Map for the 2024-25 season.

A distinct geographical shift South and East from the previous season with the return of Ipswich Town Football Club (after a long break) and Southampton FC (after a short one).

The 'Messi effect'. It's real and is boosting the popularity of Inter Miami CF by huge numbers.

I keep an eye on the popularity of MLS Teams and since I last updated this article in 2021, Inter Miami have risen from 17th to 1st (and now have over 5 million Facebook followers).

So, what happens when Messi ultimately retires at the end of this season or next. Do they go back to being the 17th most popular team or does that interest sustain?

At the end of last month, I went to a Tier 6 match St Albans City Football Club who were playing Maidstone United FC

And, what a brilliant experience it was.

A 5-goal thriller on a perfectly crisp winter day in which the home team came out 3-2 winners.

St Albans play at the Clarence Park Stadium in the picturesque Clarence Park, just a stone's throw from the main railway station.

Tier 6 is the highest level of Football where you can drink an alcoholic drink within sight of the pitch, and St Albans really makes the most of this with 3 outside bars on 3 corners of the pitch. Last season the team came within 90 minutes of promotion to Tier 5 when all this would have needed to change.

I imagine losing the alcohol sales would be quite a headache for the economic viability of the club.

On Tuesday evening I attended my first ever Enfield Town Football Club match who play in the Isthmian League - Premier Division (which is Tier 7 in the Football Pyramid).

It was a chilly night in which the 365 people in attendance saw 8 goals in a 4-4 draw with Whitehawk FC

All in all, it was an enjoyable experience. Plenty of 'ultras' behind the goal creating a decent atmosphere, a band of 15-20 away supporters, some great food and an authentic club shop with a ton of football memorabilia inside.

The Texas Rangers claim their 1st World Series, leaving just five current Major League Baseball Teams without the big prize.

52 years, 2 cities (Washington and Arlington) 2 Franchise Names (Senators > Rangers) and they finally achieved the coveted prize.

Meanwhile over in the Dutch ... its early in the season and they've played 1-2 games less than other teams but to see in bottom spot is quite some shock.

In a competition dominated by the top three (AFC Ajax / Feyenoord Rotterdam / PSV) to see any kind of disruption to established order is unprecedented.

I'm currently working on an article identifying the least successful English football team from the current 92.

It means trawling through a lot of data but an early contender for the title has to be Bristol Rovers. Two 3rd tier champions since 1883 and a handful of runner-up slots and playoff promotions. It's been slim pickings for the West country outfit, but is there anyone worse?
