I've been getting acquainted with my laser cutter as part of my ongoing learning process, with the goal of incorporating it into my woodturning projects to add a new creative dimension. Here are a few of the test pieces I've experimented with so far—though, of course, some didn’t quite make the cut (otherwise known as "learning opportunities"!).

Aside from the slate engravings, the animals, which feature a form of relief carving (deep engraving to create a semi-3D effect), have found new life as fridge magnets. I've also created a 3D-style Christmas hanging scene and some engraved coasters. One of my favorites is the cute mouse on the cheese board!

Hi I've been using my F1 and its technology to add another feature to my woodturning. Here's a picture of a spalted beech night light which I turned. It is fitted with a USB-powered LED light in the base and controlled by a remote. The remote lets you choose from different lighting moods and colors. Here is the added advantage of using the laser/cutter. I lasercut some small discs with Halloween images and placed them in the light unit, which projects the images onto the ceiling for a little bit of fun!!!

One of the main reasons I purchased a Laser (F1) was to incorporate technology into the projects I create in my workshop. For example, I recently made a couple of bird boxes using leftover materials, and this time I had the oportunity to add a little engraving.

We have known Dalmann UK for just over 10 years and were pleased to pop along to their Open Day on Saturday. Dalmann have taken over Stiles and Bates stock so there was plenty of timber, both native and exotic to see and buy. Phil Irons was demonstrating and entertaining the audience. Big thanks to Rob and his team for a great open day.
Rob was presented with a turned sailing ship made from Mulumanhyama. This was one of the first batch of timbers Dalmann imported and was purchased by Cheam as a gift to Central Oklahoma Woodturners with whom we were twinned. The timber travelled from Mozambique to the UK, then on to Phoenix and Oklahoma and finally back again to the UK !

Using a bit of technology from my new laser equipment, I've been exploring and integrating some simpler techniques into my woodturning and woodworking projects. Here are some photos showing the items I've created with their engravings and cuttings: an oak door stop (with a flat rear edge), a small thin-walled yew pot, a basswood Christmas tree (a bit early, but definitely a challenge), and an oak house wall plaque.

What an amazing day we had at the Ashstead Village Fair last Saturday!
Our talented team of 6 members proudly represented Cheam Woodturners with not one, but 2 pitches showcasing our craft. Visitors were captivated by our stalls, which featured a stunning array of handcrafted items for sale, along with live demonstrations on the lathe and scroll saw. The buzz and excitement were palpable as thousands of fair-goers stopped by to admire and learn about the intricate art of woodturning.
Check out the movie and snapshots from the day to see the magic in action.
