Eight years. 120+ tournaments. Six different putters. Rickie Fowler's full career arc in Strokes Gained data.

What we found: the 2022 collapse wasn't a putting problem — the approach numbers fragmented first. And the 2023 recovery with the Jailbird wasn't just a putter change — every SG category moved simultaneously.

The data says: sometimes the right putter doesn't fix you. It gives you permission to stop looking.

SG: Approach, SG: around the green, SG: total — every category shifted at once. That's not what a putter change looks like.

That's a player finding form across their whole game simultaneously.

Nearly neutral with the Futura X5. Marginal improvement with the SC Prototype. Then — day 1 of the 2022 PGA Championship — a new putter in the bag.

+1.66 SG: Putting that week. Wanamaker Trophy. The mallet averaged −0.10 for the rest of 2022. Classic regression to baseline — the same pattern we saw with Rahm's 7S in article one.

But unlike Rahm's Riviera moment, this one lasted four rounds. And came with a Major.

Testing → Prototype → The Win (+1.66 SG: Putting) → Regression.

The data can't prove the putter won the Major. But a full season of searching, ending on the first day of a Major, with a result like that — the timing is the most interesting data point in the series.

0.89 strokes separates the worst era from the best. Meaningful — but it's not a solved problem. It's the same problem with different numbers.

We ran Morikawa's full putter data across 2020–22. The uncomfortable finding: sometimes the equipment isn't the answer.

Jon Rahm used three different putters across the 2021–22 season. One of them — the OG 7S — produced +2.44 SG: Putting in a single round at Riviera. It lasted two weeks.

We ran every round of the season, tagged by putter, and built an interactive chart to show what the full picture looks like. The Rossie era. The 7S experiment. The three wins at the end of 2022.
