Electric bike batteries are expensive and need to be cared for in order to offer peak

performance for as long as possible – this is how to do it

Despite ebike power and torque figures increasing rapidly, battery technology

seems to be progressing at a steadier rate. Perhaps this is because torque and

power are much more attractive than battery capacity.

Modern ebikes use lithium-ion batteries, which offer long range, fast charging and

compact designs at affordable prices. They’re still expensive, though, meaning it

makes sense to look after them as best you can.

Rain arrives for some but is another UK heatwave on the way in September?
While wet weather is forecast for many this week, some long-range forecasts are suggesting further dry and sunny spells in September.

Many of us have experienced the first bit of rain in around two months as the

weather turned more unsettled on Tuesday.

This change in weather patterns will also bring lower temperatures through this

week, perhaps falling to around 2 to 4C below the mid-August average.

The prospect of cooler weather has led to speculation about the possibility of

another heatwave - the sixth of the year - developing in September.

Britain’s railway prepares for more extreme weather as intense El Niño develops

Experts say more must be done to adapt to changing climate, after two trains

derailed within 24 hours during a recent heatwave

Railway companies are racing to prepare for another brutal summer next year, as a

developing El Niño could see 2027 break more heat-related records.

Britain’s railway system has already been under stress from extreme heat this

summer, with several operators reducing timetables and train speeds.

Two trains derailed within 24 hours during the UK’s fifth heatwave in August, in

what Network Rail said had “presented exceptional challenges to the railway”.

“Traditionally, our railway system hasn’t been designed for hot weather. So that

puts our railway system under stress but also our overhead lines as well. That can

also cause trouble for the whole [railway] system, not just the ground

infrastructure,” said Xueyu Geng, a professor of ground engineering at the

University of Warwick.
