I don’t have a diploma or formal training in working with SEN students — but I love teaching people of all abilities.
Today, one of my autistic students was having a tough moment and began acting out in class. I calmly asked him to sit down, but he refused. When I gently tried to guide him to his seat, he became overwhelmed, started crying, and said he hated me. (Ouch 😃— but I get it.)
I gave him five minutes of space — not as a punishment, but as a moment to reset. When I invited him back, he rejoined the group calm, focused, and ready to learn.
It was a powerful reminder: sometimes our students aren’t being ‘naughty’ — they’re expressing distress the only way they know how. What looks like defiance can actually be a cry for help.
Compassion, patience, and calm boundaries go a long way. Every child deserves someone who understands that behaviour is communication.
