Are you confused about what Pilates actually is? Youâre not aloneâŚ
Have you heard of⌠Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, Classical Pilates, Contemporary Pilates, Clinical Pilates etc⌠I could go on.
Letâs start at the beginning:
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates. He called it Contrology as his method was designed to improve control of the body and mind and help them to work together. After he passed away it was referred to as the Pilates Method by his students and clients.
Joseph Pilates developed a range of Apparatus to use as a system to help improve flexibility and strengthen the body for the Mat workout. This includes: Reformer, Cadillac, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Wunda Chair, High Chair, Baby Arm Chair, Ped-o-pul⌠etc. how many of these have you heard of before?
Joseph Pilates invented exercises to be done on each piece of equipment. On the Mat and Reformer these are to be done in a specific order where one exercise flows into the next. They develop a connection to our body, an awareness of how to use our centre in every movement and find a two-way stretch.
As Pilates has become more mainstream it has digressed further and further from the original method. Now, in a lot of studios that claim they teach âPilatesâ, you wonât see any of the traditional equipment or exercises. Thereâll be 20 people in a class. The teachers wonât have studied the original method or even be interested in it.
It hurts to see Pilates used as a marketing tool to get more clients and make money. I have devoted 20+ years to studying, practicing and teaching the Pilates Method.
At our studio we teach Contrology, the original Pilates Method. Our teacherâs are part of the Joseph Pilates lineage. We have years of training and experience, using our understanding of the method and adapting it to the body in front of us. We teach Privates and Small Group Classes (with max 4 people). We want you to see results that improve your quality of life.
We care about the method and we care about you!
