ELIMINATE BACK PAIN | THE IMPORTANCE OF THORACIC EXTENSION
As we age, we tend to lose mobility in our back ā especially our thoracic spine. The thoracic spine/upper back makes up 80% of our trunk rotation and is really important for keeping our neck, shoulders and arms healthy and pain free. The thoracic spine and rib cage create a stable base for your neck and shoulders to sit on, so they can function efficiently. An immobile thoracic spine forces the lower back, shoulders and neck to work harder as they are now placed in inefficient positions, which over time, can cause pain and dysfunction.
In this video I demonstrate how to extend properly over a barrel, but these teaching tips can cross over to any time you are extending your thoracic.
Abs on
Neck long
Head heavy in hands
Shoulders down and away from the ears
Ribs in, anchor your hips
Breath
It is always nice to move from extension to flexion (rounding the spine) to really get the back moving. Then of course, going into rotation and lateral flexion to finish.
People with exceptional neck and back mobility (i.e. gymnasts and dancers) are usually able to extend their necks with no issues, it also looks better in photos, but it is always about understanding what you are doing, where you should be feeling it and eliminating tension in the body when you do it. We carry a lot of tension in our necks so you could really injure yourself if the neck is not supported.
Back mobility is really important. Donāt forget to take time out to stretch your spine most days or after every workout.
