If you ever thought that was quite niche, what about my new found interest in fencing for ?!

I have the wonderful to thank for that! We've just spent a great weekend in Toulouse finding out more about Solution RIPOSTE,  a France wide programme to introduce women who've had a mastectomy to an adapted form of to help them with shoulder rehab and much more!

We've met women glowing with happiness at having regained their physical fitness and confidence as part of a friendly, supportive community.

Mary and I have left feeling very,  very inspired. Let's see where it takes us....

🤺 Very grateful to Alex Agrenich for introducing me to the members of London's Haverstock Fencing Club ! I did three warm-up sessions over the past weeks, teaching the fencers key exercises to increase mobility and minimise injury.

🤓 I spoke about the best way to stretch and warm up, challenged their balance, tackled all joints, from the ankles to the wrists, and emphasised the importance of strengthening the joints within their full range of movement.

I look forward to regularly visiting the club and doing some more mobility training with the fencers.... and improving my own fencing skills!!

🎥 The first warm-up is now on my vimeo channel. The link is in my bio! 👆

Just had a really nice chat to Bilal who's a physical therapy student at Columbia University. He's conducting research focused on injury prevention in collegiate fencers and he recently got in touch to talk to me about my experience of working with fencers. We had a thoroughly enjoyable geeky chat about range of motion, impairments, imbalances and common injuries in fencers. He was also very interested in the types of exercises I prescribe to fencers. Really good to be in touch with him. There aren't many of us out there interested in movement AND fencers, so it's good to connect! Thank you Bilal!

“Pilates is not rocket science. It’s movement therapy. I’d really like it to be used more as a preventative measure. By getting people to move better and be more aware of their movement, be a bit more savvy about the way they move and what they can do in between sessions, hopefully people will not get to that point where their pain comes in the way of their game.”

Movement Routine for Fencers No.6

Here's another little routine on the topic of shoulder and spine mobility. The benefits are:

💫 you're moving your shoulder joint through a big range of movement
💫 you're working your shoulder external rotators through a big range of recruitment against gravity and added load
💫 you're moving your spine through different planes of movement
💫 you're getting some added hip extension into the whole mix!

Movement Routine for Fencers #2

Inner range knee flexion, hip flexor stretch, general hip mobility, ankle/toe mobility, balance.... all thrown into the mix!

23/09/2023

And here it is! First movement routine for fencers of the week! And for this first one, I'm treating you to a combination of shoulder and spine mobility, ankle stability and balance.

For this one, I'm using small handweights, foam balance pads and a half foam roller. Small bottles of water will do if you don't have hand weights. As for the balance bit, try standing on a folded/rolled bath towel.

Back from holidays, gradually getting back into the Pilates groove until my kids are (finally) back at school!

It was great to teach my Tuesday evening group class yesterday. I was shadowed by the lovely .t who's training to become a teacher. She'll be doing quite a bit of observation and teaching practice with me over the next few weeks.

I'll be back tomorrow which I'm very excited about and will get me back into working on the side of my business. I'll be having a chat to Luca, the Founder of next week and get back into finding the right person to teach pilates to the young fencers .

This plus all my lovely private clients whom I can't wait to welcome back into my studio from Monday! Before we know it, it will be October half term break!
