💰 Free transfer. Still cost a fortune.

Lionel Messi joined PSG in 2021 without a single euro in transfer fees. His salary alone tells a completely different story.

Reports vary — L'Equipe said €30M net per season (€60M over two years). Le Parisien said €41M net per season (€82M over two years). Capology put his gross pay at over €63M annually.

However you slice it, PSG were paying somewhere between €60M and €90M net across those two seasons. For a player who left in tears, publicly unhappy the entire time.

"We came off two difficult years. My family was fine, but I didn't feel comfortable day to day or in training."

And here's the number that stings the most for PSG. His contract included a €110M loyalty bonus — completely untouched, because Messi never saw out the deal through to 2024.

Two Ligue 1 titles. No Champions League. A player who admitted he was never truly happy there.

🔴 Liverpool are closing in on their Salah replacement. And it's going to cost a fortune.

Bradley Barcola. £120m. That would make him the fourth most expensive signing in football history — behind only Neymar, Mbappé and Isak, who Liverpool themselves paid £125m for last summer.

Here's the thing though. Barcola isn't walking into a struggling PSG side desperate to keep him. He was left out of their Super Cup win over Villa. Left out of their opening Ligue 1 game. Started on the bench in the Champions League final win over Arsenal, fighting for minutes with Kvaratskhelia and Doué.

A player good enough to command a British record-adjacent fee, but not guaranteed to start for the European champions.

Liverpool have been quiet all window — Araujó, Jacquet and Muñoz the only real additions so far. This changes everything.

Iraola summed up the frustration of it all before a ball was even kicked: "I wanted the players for the first day, July 13, everyone here. But you understand how the market works. I hate these two weeks of uncertainty."

🏆 In 2002, he won a game show. Tonight, he's in the Champions League.

Valdas Dambrauskas won Lithuania's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" as a student — about £2,500 in today's money.

He used it to move to England and chase a dream of becoming a football manager. Never played the game professionally himself. Just studied Sports Science in London and started knocking on doors.

He coached at academy level for Manchester United, Brentford and Fulham. At one point he was in charge of ninth-tier Kingsbury London Tigers — a team so far from the spotlight most fans have never heard of them.

Twenty-four years later, he's just taken charge of Azerbaijan's Sabah FK into the Champions League league phase. The club's first-ever appearance. Sabah are the ONLY team out of 28 that entered the first qualifying round to survive every single stage.

It took a stoppage-time volley just to force extra time against Hapoel Beer-Sheva, two red cards, and a 5-2 win on the night to get there.

"Sabah is the best team I've coached in my career. Today, I'm the happiest head coach in the world."

A club celebrating its ninth birthday next month, about to face the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. All traced back to a quiz show winnings and a dream nobody thought was realistic. ❤️

👀 Spurs beat Charlton 5-1. But let's look at who they actually played.

Charlton made ten changes. Their starting keeper had never played above non-league football until this summer. Two of their centre-backs got injured in the first half. This wasn't a full-strength team.

So before we get too excited about the scoreline, it's worth separating two things: what actually happened, and what it tells us.

What happened is simple. Tottenham lost 3-0 at Brentford in their league opener. A few days later, in the Carabao Cup, they beat a weakened Charlton side 5-1. Savio, who joined from Man City this week for £85m, came on with 20 minutes left and scored a goal and set up another.

That's a good sign for him personally. It doesn't tell us much else yet.

Here's the detail worth pointing out: Sandro Tonali, Tottenham's record £100m signing, didn't even make the squad for this game. Against a team missing most of its regular players. That's odd for a club-record signing, and it says something about how packed this squad now is.

Tottenham have spent big this summer. Tonali cost £100m from Newcastle. Fernandes cost £85m from West Ham. Savio cost £85m from Man City. Senesi joined free from Bournemouth. Marmoush is expected in on loan from Man City too, with a buy option reportedly around £50-60m.

That's a lot of money and a lot of new faces in one summer, after a season where Spurs were fighting relegation before De Zerbi arrived.

The honest question is whether this spending actually fixes what went wrong last season, or whether it just adds quality without solving the underlying problem — and we won't really know that until they play a full-strength Premier League team, not a rotated Championship side.

🧠 Arsenal won their season opener 3-0. Nothing broken, nothing to fix. So naturally, Arteta's about to change the team for game two.

Here's the part that's actually interesting: Ezri Konsa could make his full Arsenal debut against Aston Villa. His old club. The team that developed him, sold him, and now has to find a way to stop him in his first big test in a new shirt.

That's not a coincidence the headlines are burying. That's the story.

But the bigger thing going on here isn't one signing. It's that Arteta's entire selection policy has changed. There's no fixed best XI anymore. ⚡ Man City spent over £425 million in the last twelve months and somehow the headline isn't even the money — it's who actually took the pitch.

Here's the thing about the XI that started City's Premier League opener against Bournemouth: it's not just new faces. It's new faces beating out proven ones, for real, on matchday.

Rico Lewis — academy kid, homegrown, City through and through — started in the pivot. Mateo Kovačić, an actual full Croatia international brought in specifically for that position, was on the bench. That's not rotation. That's a statement, and it happened in the first competitive game of the season.

Same story at centre-back. Marc Guéhi walked in from Crystal Palace a few weeks ago and started too, in a defense that didn't have room for Vitor Reis, a player City spent real money developing and who's been publicly saying he wants exactly this role.

And in goal: Donnarumma, in for Ederson, a City legend of the treble era, shipped out to Fenerbahçe.

So let's be honest about what this actually is. City didn't tweak the team that just lost its manager of a decade. They gutted the spine — keeper, both centre-back spots, the base of midfield, a new forward option in Semenyo — and it wasn't a preseason experiment. Maresca started that team when it mattered.

That's not depth-building. That's a bet that the old identity was the problem, not just the guy at the top.

And look, maybe it's the right bet. Maresca's teams play patient, structured, possession-heavy football, and City clearly wanted a clean break from whatever the Pep decline looked like. Starting Lewis over Kovačić and Guéhi over Reis on merit, not reputation, is actually a defensible way to run a locker room.

But here's the part that should worry people who love this club's identity: continuity built City's dynasty. One manager, one system, over a decade. This summer looks like the opposite of that — spend big, replace the spine, throw it straight into the opening day XI, and hope the new coach's philosophy clicks faster than the money ran out.

Villa's opening bid for Mateta got rejected. £25m against a £40m valuation. Not close. And here's the thing — Palace don't need to sell. Mateta legally challenged his own contract, lost at tribunal, lost at FIFA too, and he's still there. Palace hold every card.

So why is this bid even happening?

Because Villa had zero shots on target against Brighton. Zero. Emiliano Buendía — a midfielder — started up front. A 17-year-old came off the bench. That's not squad depth, that's an emergency.

And underneath all of it sits the real story: Ollie Watkins.

Villa's all-time Premier League top scorer wants out. He's missed training, apologised to teammates, and personal terms are reportedly already agreed with Al-Hilal.
