It’s podcast day and it’s the last in the series 🥲 ⁣

This week I chatted with .doula about her experience as a postnatal doula, what making a postnatal plan actually entails, plus she also shares her advice for anyone struggling with the transition to motherhood and their mental health.⁣

I’ve had such a brilliant time recording this podcast and speaking with some phenomenal postnatal experts. ⁣

We’ve had over 1000 downloads since we started and have even recommended our podcast in one of their curated lists 😀

When I first launched the Joya postnatal ourse - my mission was always to ensure that anyone who’s given birth gets access to the expert postnatal care that they deserve and this podcast was just one way of bringing us closer to that mission. ⁣

Stay tuned for season 2. If you’re a postnatal expert or if you have a story you want to tell about your postnatal experience, then drop me a message.⁣

As always, head to our bio to listen and please please please share any episodes with friends that you find useful, rate, review and subscribe 🌟 ⁣

This week’s podcast episode on painful s*x postnatally has been one of the most listened to so far. Sadly, stories like this 👆 are all too familiar. ⁣

Unfortunately painful s*x is something that affects a lot of us postnatally, but it’s not something we should just put up with. Frustratingly, it’s not always taken seriously when we do go and seek help, so if this is something you’re experiencing, we would always suggest seeking help from a pelvic health physio. ⁣

Dr Cait Van Damm gives her advice on ways we can manage this and things we can do to help. ⁣

Remember - don’t suffer in silence, it’s not all in your head. Your experience is valid.⁣

It’s podcast day! 🎙⁣

In this weeks episode, I chatted with Dr Cait Van Damm who’s a pelvic health specialist and twin mum based in Boston. ⁣

We met on instagram through a shared love of yoga, movement and the pelvic floor. I heard her on another podcast chatting about painful s*x following childbirth and as this is something that affects a lot of us postnatally, I thought I’d invite her on to the Joya postnatal podcast to chat about it in more detail. ⁣
We all differ when it comes to when we’re ready to have s*x again following childbirth. This conversation focuses on those who experience pain during s*x many months or even years after. ⁣

Because Dr Cait has such a wealth of knowledge around the pelvic floor, this led us into a wider discussion around our pelvic health and how everything is connected and that we should be approaching our pelvic health with a completely holistic approach.⁣

This episode is also brilliant to listen to if you’re a postnatal fitness specialist.

That first night home.

It hits different to the first night in hospital, for me it did anyway.

It’s almost like when you’re on the ward and surrounded by midwives and fellow new mamas you’re in a sort of ‘bubble’. You feel safe and protected. You feel comforted at the sight and sound of other new parents in exactly the same position as you. You’re on cloud 9. You’re exhausted, but happy.

But then you get back to your place and it hits you just how much has changed. The night feeds are suddenly quieter. There’s no midwife on the end of the buzzer next to your bed. You have to figure it all out on your own. It’s bloody scary.

Both nights home, I cried for the entire evening. I don’t think I stopped fully until the next day. My emotions were so big I had no idea how to even comprehend them. I was overwhelmed. I missed my bump. I kept thinking about ‘the last time I was here I was pregnant!’ and I longed to be back there.

That first night home can be so fragile.

Remember that too, partners.☺️

Voicing such confusing, intense and unexpected emotions can be difficult and she may not know how to.

Be attentive. Get her everything she needs. Hold her. Hug her. Tell her it will be okay. Remind her how beautiful she is.

It can make all the difference 💗

In this weeks episode I chatted with Tatiana Martinez who’s a mother of four, postnatal midwife and founder of which is a Private Postnatal Care Midwifery business supporting mothers with one to one, 24/7 postnatal care. ⁣

This is a really great episode to listen to if you’re thinking you might want some extra support postnatally as Tatiana goes into detail about what a postnatal midwife actually does and how they differ from someone like a doula.⁣

Enjoy the episode! Head to the link in our bio to listen ⁣👆

.nove There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you. The true meaning of what it means to love you is to mentally, emotionally and physically “cut myself open.” 🤍

To start this new chapter meant facing my biggest fear, the one I had just conquered. Would I feel the same failure, would I feel regret, would I hate my body for it, could I lay on that table again with fear pacing through my mind. I didn’t know...but I would do it...for you.

And for you I did, this time...was different. This time I felt a calmness, I felt warmth and appreciation for our journey. I knew it would be hard but this time I knew exactly how to love you and how to love me. I knew that as myself I was perfectly what you needed, and on the inside or outside I was your home. My skin, my heartbeat, my touch, my smell...that’s what you love, that is what you know as mama, your safe place.

You loving me helps me love myself and this time we flew right from the start. My second little bird that gave mama all the confidence in the world to know that she can ♥️. for loving me

It’s podcast day! ⁣🎙

In this week’s episode I chatted with Zoe who’s a mother of two, postnatal activist and founder of an organisation which is pushing for change in postpartum care. She also leads healing circles and is training to be a doula.

Zoe had pretty awful and traumatic experience postnatally following the birth of her second child. ⁣

She very bravely shares how she’s been facing an ongoing battle to receive proper care and support in order to recover from a labial tear that never fully healed. This was sadly exasperated by the pandemic. ⁣

What she’s experienced is just so unfair, but when she posted about it on her own social media she realised it’s not uncommon. Which is why she started Postpartum Matters in order to radically change how we are supported postnatal. I’ve been following Zoe’s journey for a while and she’s truly inspirational having been through so much and turned it into a positive and continues to fight for change. ⁣

I will warn you that Zoe does go into some detail, so if you are pregnant or have experienced birth or postnatal trauma then perhaps listen with caution or come back to when you’re feeling ready to listen.⁣

𝗦𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 (𝗖-𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗩𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆) 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 ⁣

This is the podcast I wish I had listened to in the lead up to, or just after giving birth. ⁣

It’s estimated that around 9/10 vaginal births involves some degree of tearing and c-sections account for 1 in 5 births, so that’s a lot of us needing stitches after birth, but how many of us actually receive guidance or information on how to look after these stitches? ⁣

I didn’t receive any information about how to care for my stitches after an episiotomy and as you’ll hear in this episode I definitely had no idea what I was doing 🤦🏻‍♀️ I suffered a pretty bad infection that required antibiotics which pushed back my recovery process, (although I suspect I had the infection right after birth).⁣

Dr Sarah who is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist working in Dublin, shares her knowledge and experience and offers a handy guide to anyone who’s just given birth or is just about to give birth. ⁣

As there’s a bit of cross over, we cover both vaginal deliveries and c-sections and also have some additional advice on c-section aftercare.⁣

I hope you find it useful, please share with anyone else that you think it might help and don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe to the podcast! ⁣

IT'S PODCAST DAY 🎙

I absolutely loved chatting with nutritional therapist about the ways we can support our postnatal recovery through nutrition. ⁣

When I had my son, I bought that “first 40 days” cook book, didn’t look at it once and had a bedside table full of snacks and ate pies (I developed an unhealthy obsession with Higgidy pies after I had Sebastian).⁣

There’s so much going on postnatally that it’s really important to eat the right things as we want our digestive system to be working well, especially if we’ve got stitches or have had a c-section…straining for poos is not fun! There are also lots of tips Jodie gives about what vitamins can help speed up the recovery process and rebalance our hormones.

It can feel pretty overwhelming to know where to start with all of this, so if you’re expecting a baby or have just had a baby give this episode a listen and maybe send it to someone who can help you prep some batch cooking or better still, do all the cooking for you! Looking at you birth partners 😉
