It’s that time of year again folks - the new term will be here before you’ve shaken the sand out of your flip flops..... 11+ interview training starts again in September so help boost your child’s confidence by giving them tailored one to one interview practice. And we're off! 'Tis the season for trawling the secondary school open days again. Whilst these sessions are good to get a general feel for the school/facilities etc, it's also a good idea to try and get an appointment for a private or small group tour - preferably on a normal school day. That way you can see how the teachers and pupils interact and maybe get a chance to chat to the children. If the Head is around it's also really interesting to see how the staff and pupils relate to them. Sometimes body language speaks volumes!

If your child is lucky enough to receive more than one offer for a secondary school place this week, think carefully before you ask them to choose. Of course it's paramount that they feel comfortable going there - after all they're the ones who have to turn up to class for the next 5 years! But remember that sometimes their opinions can be swayed by things like whether their best friend is going there (I can guarantee that by the end of year 7 they'll have moved on with their friendships) or if they think the school dinners are nice! It's hard to think long-term but that's precisely what you need to do. They might be 11 now but they'll soon be teens so together with your child try and determine the school that will best suit their needs, not just for today but for their future selves. Good luck to all!

This week, as acceptance/rejection letters start to drop through your letters boxes, consider how you will break the good/bad news to your Year 6 child. If not handled sensitively this can turn into a lifelong negative memory. Even the most robust of personalities will probably need some careful expectations management. This year the word is that "it's even harder than last year, with less places available". Be comforted by the fact that I've been hearing the same thing for the last five years!

"Apart from the academics, what else are schools looking for in a potential candidate?" This is a question I am regularly asked by parents. It varies from school to school, but generally speaking they are looking for well-rounded individuals who are, to quote a Head I spoke to a few years ago, "both interested and interesting." Some schools also like candidates to be informed about current affairs. This doesn't mean that they're expected to know all about quantitive easing but it DOES mean that they should have a general awareness and knowledge of the world around them. 'First News', the free paper aimed at children (supplied by most Primary schools) is a good place to start!

I have no idea if this conversation actually ever took place, but another parent relayed this story to me a few years ago....
INTERVIEWER: what do you think you would bring to the school?
CHILD: er .... my pencil case? .....
