The Player Always Comes First!
Whether you are a coach, physiotherapist, performance analyst, club director, or agent — your role exists because of the players. Without them, there is no team, no game, no system.
The Principle:
“For every individual working in sport, no matter the position, the focus must always be on the player — not on money, not on personal success.”
What That Looks Like in Practice:
1. In Decision-Making
• Every decision — from training loads to contract terms — should answer:
→ “Is this in the player’s best interest?”
• Sacrificing player well-being or long-term development for financial or political gain is a betrayal of trust.
2. In Communication
• Speak with players, not just about them.
• Empower them to take ownership of their growth.
3. In Organizational Culture
• Create environments where players feel safe, respected, and heard.
• Avoid toxic hierarchies where athletes are treated as products instead of people.
The Consequences of Forgetting This:
• When personal agendas or profit come before players, we see:
o Burnout
o Mental health crises
o Broken trust
o Talent lost too early
o A culture of fear or manipulation
Sport becomes transactional, not transformational
The Reward of Putting Players First:
• Players thrive, both on and off the field.
• Trust builds between staff and athletes.
• Organizations gain long-term success, because fulfilled players perform better and
stay committed.
