‘Employee satisfaction’ is driving high performers out of the corporate world. When people pleasing counts for more than adding value, your best people stop contributing, and start leaving.

How do you spot this?

- Count the number of times people challenge the leader vs agree with everything they say

- What needs to be said happens outside the room rather than in the room

- When someone actually says the truth, they’re judged for being too harsh

- Employee engagement scores are valued more than delivering performance

The healthiest performance cultures work back from investigating, ‘what does it take to win’? And when you do this, you realise that friction, healthy conflict, and productive disagreement is the only way through to excellence.

Oh and when you intentionally design a workplace like this, it dramatically improve trust, and retains your best talent.

How speak up for your colleagues đŸ«¶

It happens all the time. But it can be awkward to address this.

I’d say something like this: “I agree with what you’re saying, isn’t that what Claire said earlier?”

Then stay silence. Let the silence do its work. They’ll think twice next time.

Asking open questions has its place. But elicitation can also be a powerful tool.

State what you see
 and this works because humans crave correction. They want to correct you and answer it on their terms. But elicitation has to be genuine, otherwise you risk it being seen as manipulative.
