After Morocco shocked football fans worldwide with their 3-0 win against Spain last night on penalties, we wanted to look back at some of the most shocking results in FIFA World Cup history! Who doesn't love an underdog? 😏
1) North Korea beat Italy in 1966.
North Korea was expected to finish without points in the group stages of the 1966 World Cup. An initial 3-0 loss to the Soviet Union backed up these predictions, but North Korea shocked the world when they beat Italy 1-0 in their next game.
2) Northern Ireland beat host country Spain in 1982.
In only their second appearance at a World Cup, and after drawing their first two group match games, Northern Ireland managed a 1-0 victory over their Spanish hosts. This is particularly impressive considering that the team played the final 30 minutes with 10 men after Mal Donaghy received a red card!
3) Bulgaria beat Germany in 1994.
In the quarter final stage of the 1994 World Cup, Bulgaria defeated Germany and responded to their initial goal by scoring back-to-back goals, just three minutes apart, late in the game.
4) Senegal beat France in 2002.
France, the defending champions going into the 2002 tournament, were knocked out in the group stages, largely thanks to Senegal who defeated France 1-0 in the tournament opener, and their debut appearance at the World Cup! Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal of the game in its 30th minute.
