A few days late with this post, but things have been a bit crazy lately! πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

You may remember a post from a few weeks back with Ken from Hardy Fly Fishing up to Fionn Loch? Well, it was so good I just had to return there with Zjaak from the Netherlands, who was keen to explore further up the loch, using the boat (now with upgraded engine) from Assynt Angling Club.

After a great start swinging wets on the Upper Kirkaig, we headed all the way up the loch, went ashore and took the short walk to the Uidh an Fhearna river.

Although the river was a little lower than expected, it still delivered the goods. Many, many feisty Brown Trout and we both hooked but lost a few really nice specimens.

This river took up so much of our time we ended up only having literally half-a-dozen casts on the east end of Fionn once back at the boat but we again were into fish straight away and actually finished this incredible trip with a double hook-up and simultaneous release!

Perfect! πŸŽ£πŸ‘Œ

A stream is never just a stream. It's a whole world of its own.

In a short walk, you can move through so many different moodsβ€”from fast, energetic water to calm, deep pools. It's like fishing several different pieces of water in a single day.

That variety is what makes these places so special.

One of the best things about this season has been the number of family adventures on the water. A great example was the recent day out with Cayden, Riley, and their aunt Lynn.

Seeing such passion and skill in anglers aged 15 and 12 is just fantastic for the sport. With Cayden already tying his own flies, it was a lot of fun taking them to the next level and exploring some new streams together.

It's a huge privilege to be a part of these days. Here's to many more.

I knew it was going to be one of those days. One to remember. I can't really say why. I just KNEW it. Days in advance.

It was the third day out on the waters of Assynt with Ken from Hardy Fly Fishing and it was to be a true finale! The forecast was grim, strengthening wind and 80% chance of significant rain all day. So we had an EARLY start and were at the east end of Fionn Loch by 09:00. The weather was indeed grim, but a short time into the day Ken hit the jackpot and, after a tense battle, the third stunning fish snagged during our three day expedition was the fist one to make it to the net!

And the day congratulated us with a clearing of the skies, lifting cloud to slowly reveal Suilven and one of those sessions that really lives long in the memory. A stunning fish every three casts or so.

The cruise back down the loch at the end of the day was swift and smooth thanks to the great new engines on the Angling Club boat and we were even escorted some of the way by a gliding Sea Eagle.

I live for days like these.

Thanks Ken. See you again soon!

A huge thanks to Sarah and Sam from the US for a brilliant day out recently.

They were an enthusiastic young couple who jumped into the Assynt fly fishing experience with real gusto. It was a pleasure to guide them, and I was so happy to see their kind words in a recent review:

"We had a wonderful time with Stewart! He is a great person and guide and we would love to fish with him again! He helped us improve our casting technique, told us amazing local tales and taught us all about the local flora, fauna and geology. It was my first time catching native brown trout and very exciting!"

A fantastic day. Thanks again, you two.

A family trip to Loch Sionascaig today. Partly a reconnaissance mission for an upcoming fly fishing safari, but also a trip down memory lane.

At around aged 18, 30+ years ago, I camped at the North end of Sionascaig. Here you see me standing on the spot that my tent was pitched all those decades ago, but now with my 16 year old son at my side. Emotional!
