Llantrisant Knights 24, Beddau Colliers 38.
After a long hot summer the recent rainfall was just enough to deem the Cefn Mably surface playable and on a fine dry day the conditions helped to ensure a very entertaining game between two good sides.
With Beddau’s Division 5 athletic game off it ensured their colliers could field a strong squad albeit with uncontested scrums. The young Llantrisant front row remained as selected and despite not scrum learnings, the game time will still benefit them.
Ten minutes into the first half Llan got the first score with a Try by scrum half Ben Williams well converted by Outside half Ben Wilding. 7-0
From the re-start Llan failed to clear their lines and exit their 22 which allowed Beddau to pressure and get their opening try, converted by full back Owen Cotter.
7-7.
Some 9 minutes later Beddau took the lead with another Try converted by Cotter which 4 minutes later after several phases downfield Llan fullback Regan Young dabbed down in the corner but Wilding’s conversion attempt from the touchline was just wide.
12-14 with just over half an hour played. A yellow card for Llantrisant winger Mattia D’Angelo for an accidental but dangerous tackle meant Llan were down a player and Beddau showed their experience to attack that side as often as possible and stretch the home defence. 2 try’s in the space of 7 minutes, one in the corner following several phases that Cotter converted followed by a blind side snipe by scrum half Luke Davies which the conversion failed took the score 12 - 26 at the half time whistle.
The second Half continued to be fiercely contested and it was 16 minutes before the next points when Beddau extended their lead with a Try to 12 -31. The Young Llantrisant Knights kept fighting on though and with great endeavour, all whilst Beddau utilised some good replacements and the game continued to be highly entertaining. The effort brought reward when Regan Young crossed for his 2nd try to claw the score back to 17-31.
Beddau moved further ahead 4 minutes later with a converted Try to keep a healthy lead; 17-38 but Llan kept battling and got what would be the last points of the day when centre Joseph Danter dived in at the corner to secure a 4 try bonus point and Wilding slotted the extras with a fine touchline conversion to make it 24-38.
Moments after, the referee, who it must be said had a fine game and helped ensure a great advert for the CCC league, blew the final whistle and both teams agreed that it had been a cracking game!
Man of the match for Llantrisant, chosen by Beddau was Captain Dan Hayman.
Despite the defeat against the league favourites, there were loads of positives for Llantrisant and this young team will continue to learn and grow. Next up for the Knights is the visit of Llandaff to Cefn Mably on Saturday in the CCC league and the boys would love your support.
