Back in the late 1950′s a group of keen and very enthusiastic shooters got together with an interest in forming a Wildfowling Club in the Kidwelli area. As word spread about the intentions of this group of men, more and more began to show their interest. Slowly, but surely a club was starting to be born and by 1960 Carmarthenshire Wildfowling Association was formed and became affiliated to WAGBI,
the Wildfowlers Association of Great Britain and Ireland. (Known to us all today as BASC)
In the early years club members shot over ground where no leases had been achieved, this led to non club members shooting over the same grounds, a sort of free for all. These grounds were namely Kidwelly, Ferryside and the Machynys Marshes. This caused a lot of friction in the local shooting community. In the middle of the 1980s negotiations started with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust who were in the process of opening a centre at Penclacwydd, Bynea, in order to keep wildfowling on Machynys Marsh, which would be leased through Countryside Council for Wales (CCW). After successful negotiations, this led to plans to get other areas leased to the club to secure our shooting. In 2010 the club celebrated its 50th Anniversary, and now boasts over 80 members, and has leases on all its land. This makes CWA one of the biggest clubs with aquired foreshore and marsh land. The key to the clubs success lies in its younger members being able to succeed the older generations, with the same drive, enthusiasm, dedication, hunger, passion, love and respect for wildfowling. At a time when there are many political views against shooting, its the CWA and other clubs alike who need to stand strong and fight for our countryside sports, to ensure that our children, grand children and great grand children can enjoy our sport for many years to come. Im sure this is the legacy that group of men would have wanted back in the 1950′s. We have them to thank.
