Hammer(s) blow restricts Llechryd to a Single(ton)....
Llechryd hit the road to fulfill their rearranged fixture with Penrhiwllan Bowls Club tonight and came very close to sharing the points.
In a much changed line-up from that which played at Capel Dewi 24 hours earlier, same players, different positions, Llechryd were optimistic for what lay ahead.
That optimism was soon put to the test in the singles. Llechryd captain Andrew, 2-0 down then 3-2 up against the evergreen Paul Hoad, then went 6 ends without scoring as Paul opened up a 10 shot lead with a combination of dead weight draws and a couple of weighted efforts thrown in for good measure. Andrew took the last 3 ends to bring a touch of respectability to the scoreline but the damage had already been done. Paul winning by 13-10.
The Llechryd pair of Simon and Myra took the first four ends against Steve and Alison to lead 7-0. Penrhiwllan brought it back to 7-3, before Llechryd took it to 11-3. Singles on each of the last three ends weren't enough to prevent Llechryd taking the victory 11-6.
The home, away scoring pattern from their last match saw Llechryd's triples of Steve, Rob and Elaine 4-4 after four ends against Sue, club captain Carole and Paul Davis. Penrhiwllan went into the final end with a 1 shot lead and managed to net a further 2 to win by 11-8.
Llechryd's four of Anne, Dai, Tricia and Pauline restricted the home quartet of Lynne, Finley, Andrea and Paul Singleton to only 3 scoring ends but it was enough for the home team to eke out a draw with the final delivery of the evening. 4-2 up after five ends, 'Llan then bagged a 3 to lead 7-2. Llechryd painstakingly inched their way back to trail 7-6 going into the final end. Holding the 2 they needed to complete the fightback, and the path to the jack seemingly blocked off on both hands, Paul S went heavy and did enough to push 1 of the holding woods away, Llechryd having to be content with a 7-7 draw.
