🐐 The Gravity-Defying Goats of Cingino Dam

High in the Italian Alps, near Antrona Schieranco in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont, stands the remarkable Cingino Dam — and an even more remarkable sight. On this nearly vertical 160-foot wall, Alpine ibex goats can often be seen performing what seems like an impossible feat: climbing straight up the dam’s face.

The Alpine ibex, native to the European Alps, are renowned for their incredible agility. Their split hooves have rubber-like soles that provide an extraordinary grip, allowing them to balance effortlessly on tiny ledges and near-vertical surfaces.

But why risk the climb? The answer lies in salt. The stones that make up the Cingino Dam contain natural mineral salts, especially concentrated near the top. Since their grass-based diet lacks sodium, these daring climbers scale the dam in search of this vital nutrient, licking the salt-encrusted stones to replenish their bodies.

It’s a breathtaking spectacle — a perfect blend of instinct, adaptation, and the raw beauty of nature’s determination.😘😋
